View page
US Patent:
6502995, Jan 7, 2003
Filed:
Sep 18, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/663549
Inventors:
Suat Ali Ozsoylu - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16C 2308
US Classification:
384496, 384517
Abstract:
A virtual ball joint, comprising a pair of bearings disposed about a center of curvature; each of the bearing comprising an inner race and an outer race supporting a plurality of balls therebetween. The inner and outer races have angled surfaces in contact with the balls, such that the outer angled surfaces coincide with an imaginary sphere centered about the center of curvature. A shaft mounted in the bearings may thus be rotated about the center of curvature as if mounted with a ball joint.

Jon D. Demerly - Byron MI, US
Farhad Bolourchi - Novi MI, US
Tomy Sebastian - Saginaw MI, US
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B62D005/04
US Classification:
180444
Abstract:
An electric power steering system, comprising: a steering wheel in operable communication with a mechanical linkage; a steering shaft in operable communication with the mechanical linkage, and in operable communication with at least one road wheel; a first transmission in operable communication with the steering shaft; a unidirectional electric motor in operable communication with the first transmission; wherein the electric power steering system is configured such that when the steering wheel is turned in a first direction, the motor's power is transmitted in the first direction to the steering shaft, and when the steering wheel is turned in a second direction, the motor's power is transmitted in the second direction to the steering shaft. A method for providing power assist for an electric power steering system, the method comprising: rotating a first body in a first direction with a unidirectional motor; rotating a second body in a second direction with the unidirectional motor; providing a power assist from the first body when a steering wheel is turned in a first direction; and providing a power assist from the second body when a steering wheel is turned in a second direction.

11/016039
Inventors:
Suat Ali Ozsoylu - Rochester Hills MI, US
Matthew Harvey Jimkoski - Freeland MI, US
Michael Richard Pyrett - Flint MI, US
William F. Feriend - Freeland MI, US
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B62D 5/04
US Classification:
180444, 64 8923, 64 8936
Abstract:
A steering system for a vehicle may include a load displacement system allowing transient loads of the steering mechanism to be displaced. The steering system may also include a first coupling mechanism coupling an electric motor to a rack housing, and a second coupling mechanism coupling a ball nut to a rack. A method for providing an actuation force to a rack of a vehicle includes isolating non-axial loads from an electric motor of a steering system and isolating non-axial loads from a linearly actuatable member of a rotary-to-linear conversion device in the steering system. An actuator for a steering system may include a rotary to linear actuator, a movable linear section, and an interface between the rotary to linear actuator and the linear section. The interface may include one or more cylindrical joints, revolute joints, compliant members, or a block on a plane wherein the total degrees of freedom for the system including the rotary to linear actuator, rack, and interface may be one, while the interface may be limited to three degrees of freedom.

Power Steering Assembly

US Patent:
7477026, Jan 13, 2009
Filed:
Mar 2, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/713141
Inventors:
Suat A. Ozsoylu - Rochester Hills MI, US
Assignee:
Delphi Technologies, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
H02P 1/00
US Classification:
318119, 318116, 318129, 318135, 310258, 180444, 180446
Abstract:
The invention provides for a power steering assembly and method of actuation for assisting a driver in moving the steerable wheels of a vehicle. The power steering assembly includes a housing that defines a chamber. A steering rod is disposed in the chamber and is longitudinally moveable within the chamber. A shoulder is fixed to the steering rod and has opposing sides. A shaft is supported by the housing and engages the steering rod translating the rotational movement of the shaft into a longitudinal movement of the steering rod. A first actuator and second actuator are disposed in the chamber on opposing sides of the shoulder. The first and second actuators each have an excitable material that is controlled in a series of actuations to advance the actuators in a linear movement for pushing against the shoulder to move the steering rod longitudinally within the chamber.
