Apparatus And Method For Adaptive Control

View page
US Patent:
6901108, May 31, 2005
Filed:
May 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/849852
Inventors:
James Russell Blodgett - Walnut Creek CA, US
Gerald L. Frazer - Atkinson NH, US
Michael W Goodwin - North Andover MA, US
Karen E. Leonard - Salem NH, US
James P Moffatt - Salem NH, US
Fan Zhang - Haverhill MA, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H03K005/159
US Classification:
375232, 375347, 375150, 375149, 375147, 329316, 341140, 341 50
Abstract:
An adaptive controller generates a sequence of dither signals for each of a plurality of control parameters. Each dither signal sequence is uncorrelated with every other dither signal sequence. Each nominal control signal has the first of its respective dither signal values simultaneously summed with it to form the control parameter values used by the controller. Updated control signals are applied in parallel to the controller outputs and a performance measure is taken and stored. The second signals in the dither control sequences are then summed with their respective nominal controls and applied in parallel to the controller and a second performance measure is taken and stored. This process is repeated for the length of the dither control signal sequence to yield a sequence of performance measurements. The sequence of performance measurements is correlated with each of the dither sequences, forming sequences of correlator outputs, one for each control signal. Each correlator output sequence is integrated and, depending upon the value of a correlator's integration output, the corresponding nominal signal has it's dither value added to or subtracted from it to form the respective, updated control values.

Efficient System And Method For Converting Between Different Transform-Domain Signal Representations

View page
US Patent:
6963842, Nov 8, 2005
Filed:
Sep 5, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/948053
Inventors:
Michael M. Goodwin - Scotts Valley CA, US
Assignee:
Creative Technology Ltd. - Singapore
International Classification:
G10L021/00
US Classification:
704500, 7042001, 704203, 704269, 704230, 341 50, 395238
Abstract:
A memory-efficient system converting a signal from a first transform domain to a second transform domain. The system includes a first mechanism that obtains an input signal expressed via a first transform-domain signal representation. A second mechanism expresses the input signal via a second transform-domain signal representation without intermediate time-domain conversion. In the specific embodiment, the input signal is a Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) signal. The second transform-domain signal representation is a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) signal. The second mechanism further includes a third mechanism that combines effects of an inverse MDCT, a synthesis window function, and an analysis window function, and provides a first signal in response thereto. A fourth mechanism converts the MDCT signal to the DFT signal based on the first signal. In a more specific embodiment, the synthesis window function is an MDCT synthesis window function, while the analysis window function is a DFT analysis window function.

Carlos Avendano - Campbell CA, US
Michael Goodwin - Scotts Valley CA, US
Ramkumar Sridharan - Capitola CA, US
Martin Wolters - Nurnberg, DE
Assignee:
Creative Technology Ltd. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
H03G 5/00
H04B 15/00
G10L 19/14
G10L 21/00
G10L 21/02
US Classification:
381 942, 381 941, 381 943, 381 98, 381103, 704224, 704225, 704226
Abstract:
A system and method are disclosed for enhancing audio signals by nonlinear spectral operations. Successive portions of the audio signal are processed using a subband filter bank. A nonlinear modification is applied to the output of the subband filter bank for each successive portion of the audio signal to generate a modified subband filter bank output for each successive portion. The modified subband filter bank output for each successive portion is processed using an appropriate synthesis subband filter bank to construct a modified time-domain audio signal. High modulation frequency portions of the audio signal may be emphasized or de-emphasized, as desired. The modification may be applied within one or more frequency bands.

Transient Detection And Modification In Audio Signals

View page
US Patent:
7353169, Apr 1, 2008
Filed:
Jun 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/606196
Inventors:
Michael Goodwin - Scotts Valley CA, US
Carlos Avendano - Campbell CA, US
Martin Wolters - Nuremberg, DE
Ramkumar Sridharan - Capitola CA, US
Assignee:
Creative Technology Ltd. - Singapore
International Classification:
G10L 21/00
US Classification:
704224, 704225
Abstract:
A system and method are disclosed for transient detection and modification in audio signals. Digital signal processing techniques are used to detect transients and modify an audio signal to enhance or suppress such transients, as desired. A transient audio event is detected in a first portion of the audio signal. A graded response to the detected transient audio event is determined. The first portion of the audio signal is modified in accordance with the graded response. The extent of enhancement or suppression (as applicable) may be determined at least in part by a measure of the significance or magnitude of the transient.
