Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Of The Foot Muscles For Prevention Of Deep Vein Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism With Motion Detection Control

View page
US Patent:
20060085047, Apr 20, 2006
Filed:
Oct 18, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/966143
Inventors:
John Unsworth - Hamilton, CA
Robert Kaplan - Buffalo NY, US
James Czyrny - Amherst NY, US
Jack Hirsh - Burlington, CA
International Classification:
A61N 1/08
US Classification:
607048000, 607144000
Abstract:
The invention describes a method to automatically controlling, single channel Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) of the plantar muscle, in response to the sensing of motion of the foot or leg: to reduce accommodation of the stimulated plantar muscle and attendant reduction of contractions, which when undiminished increase blood flow for the prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE); to turn off the stimulation during walking or running to prevent slips or falls; and to reduce power consumption of the unit that provides the stimulation.

Programmable Electrical Stimulation Of The Foot Muscles

US Patent:
20110178572, Jul 21, 2011
Filed:
Jan 15, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/687935
Inventors:
James Joseph Czyrny - Amherst NY, US
Robert E. Kaplan - Buffalo NY, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/34
A61N 1/36
US Classification:
607 46, 607 48
Abstract:
System, device and method for providing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to muscles of foot. The device includes an electrical signal generator for producing a wave pattern of variable frequency, duration, intensity, ramp time and on-off cycle. Device further includes surface electrodes for being positioned over the foot muscles or around ankles and attached to signal generator. Signal generator is programmed to stimulate the foot muscles and nerves. Location of the electrodes and the programming are adjusted to reduce pooling of the blood in the soleal veins of the calf and enhance venous blood flow to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), to enhance venous blood flow for the post-thrombotic syndrome patient, to expedite wound healing, to reduce neuropathic pain of the foot and ankle, chronic musculoskeletal pain of the ankle and foot, and acute post-operative foot and ankle pain, and to prevent muscular atrophy of the foot muscles.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Of The Foot Muscles For Prevention Of Deep Vein Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism

US Patent:
6615080, Sep 2, 2003
Filed:
Mar 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/819678
Inventors:
John Duncan Unsworth - Flamborough, Ontario, L9H 2H9, CA
Jack Hirsh - Hamilton, Ontario, L8P 4G5, CA
Robert Edward Kaplan - Buffalo NY, 14222
James Joseph Czyrny - Amherst NY, 14226
International Classification:
A61N 100
US Classification:
607 2
Abstract:
A single channel neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) device for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), lower extremity edema, and other associated conditions by electrical stimulation of the muscles of the foot muscles. An electrical signal generator produces a square wave pattern of variable frequency, duration, intensity, ramp time, and stimulation on-off cycle. Surface electrodes are positioned over the foot muscles and are attached to the stimulator by various means. The stimulator is programmed in a manner to stimulate the foot muscles to reduce pooling of the blood in the soleal veins of the calf This is accomplished by only stimulating the soles of the feet.

Filed:
Jan 15, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/248678
Inventors:
- Buffalo NY, US
James J. Czyrny - Amherst NY, US
Scott E. Friedman - Amherst NY, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/04
A61N 1/36
Abstract:
System, device and method for providing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to muscles of foot. The device includes an electrical signal generator for producing a wave pattern of variable frequency, duration, intensity, ramp time and on-off cycle. The device further includes surface electrodes for being positioned over the foot muscles or around ankles and attached to the signal generator. The device includes a wearable device for positioning a first electrode adjacent a heel of the wearer's foot and a second electrode adjacent an arch of the foot. The signal generator is programmed to stimulate the foot muscles and nerves. Location of the electrodes and the programming are adjusted to reduce pooling of the blood in the soleal veins of the calf and enhance venous blood flow to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT); to enhance venous blood flow for the post-thrombotic syndrome patient; to expedite wound healing; to reduce neuropathic pain of the foot and ankle, chronic musculoskeletal pain of the ankle and foot, and acute post-operative foot and ankle pain; and to prevent muscular atrophy of the foot muscles.
