Cuba: More than a beach

When I visited Cuba in 2004 to research political conflicts around child migration, I worked with a Cuban colleague, going through their film archive. She said to me in this offhand way, If you want to know anything about the recent history of this country, listen to Carlos Varela.

She spent months translating Varelas lyrics and published them as My Havana: The Musical City of Carlos Varela, and eventually brought Varela to Kingston for a concert and to receive an honorary degree from Queens University.
