Drill Bit With Canted Gage Insert

View page
US Patent:
6640913, Nov 4, 2003
Filed:
Jun 30, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/107639
Inventors:
Alan W. Lockstedt - Houston TX
Gary R. Portwood - Kingwood TX
Scott D. McDonough - Houston TX
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 1008
US Classification:
175331, 175374, 175426
Abstract:
A rolling cone drill bit is provided that has gage inserts on the first row from the bit axis to cut to full gage diameter that have a cutting portion enhanced with a layer of super abrasive material. The gage cutting surface has a center axis that is canted to be more normal to the gage curve such that its point of contact at gage is away from the thinner portion of the layer of super abrasive material.

Cutting Elements Of Gage Row And First Inner Row Of A Drill Bit

US Patent:
6848521, Feb 1, 2005
Filed:
Sep 10, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/658888
Inventors:
Alan W. Lockstedt - Houston TX, US
Gary R. Portwood - Kingwood TX, US
Scott D. McDonough - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 1016
US Classification:
175431, 175331
Abstract:
The present invention generally relates to positioning and/or orienting inserts on a gage row and/or a first inner row to optimize the duty among inserts on the gage row and/or insert row of cutting a sidewall and bottom hole of a bore hole such that wear and breakage of inserts are reduced and the life of the bit is enhanced.

Self Relieving Seal

US Patent:
6976548, Dec 20, 2005
Filed:
Apr 2, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/406065
Inventors:
James L. Neville - Conroe TX, US
James L. Larsen - Spring TX, US
Steven W. Peterson - The Woodlands TX, US
Manikiran Bandi - Pearland TX, US
Alan Lockstedt - Houston TX, US
Peter T. Cariveau - Houston TX, US

Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B010/22
US Classification:
175371, 175359, 277926, 277928
Abstract:
Self relieving seals of this invention comprise an elastomeric seal body having a first sealing surface and a second sealing surface for contact with respective drill bit sealing surfaces. The seal includes a pair of external surfaces that each extend along the seal body between the first and second sealing surfaces. The seal includes one or more relief ports that are disposed through the seal body and that have openings through each of the seal body external surfaces. The relief port can be specially configured, e. g. , have different diameter sections of constant or variable dimensions, to provide a degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal body when the seal is loaded within the drill bit. The seal may include an element, e. g. , solid, tubular, or porous, disposed within the relief port to provide a further desired degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal when the seal is loaded within the drill bit.

US Patent:
7121365, Oct 17, 2006
Filed:
Dec 23, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/744112
Inventors:
Robert M. Denton - Pearland TX, US
Alan W. Lockstedt - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
