Power Supply

View page
US Patent:
6683395, Jan 27, 2004
Filed:
Jun 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/896256
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN
James Wolter Ernst - Carmel IN
John Ryan Schnellenberger - Westfield IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing, S.A. - Boulogne-Billancourt
International Classification:
H02J 100
US Classification:
307149
Abstract:
A connector with a limited ampacity supplies a load which draws more current than the ampacity of the connector. A buck converter changes the power passing through the connector to a higher current at a lower voltage to energize the load. Alternatively, if the load is intermittent, the current passing through the connector may charge a large capacitor which is able to supply a larger current to the intermittent load. The capacitor may also be used to power a continuous load, such as a memory, during failure of a power supply feeding the connector.

Data Bus Driver Having First And Second Operating Modes For Coupling Data To The Bus At First And Second Rates

View page
US Patent:
6693678, Feb 17, 2004
Filed:
Nov 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/581780
Inventors:
Juri Tults - Indianapolis IN
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing S.A. - Boulogne
International Classification:
H04N 514
US Classification:
348571, 348720, 348901, 710110, 710 14
Abstract:
Information is coupled to a data bus such as an I C data bus using a push-pull circuit. The push-pull circuit provides for communicating on the data bus at two different data rates. The push-pull circuit includes an active pull-up device that is enabled during a first push-pull mode of operation for providing a high data rate. During a second normal mode of operation, the active pull-up device is disabled providing a low data rate. When the active pull-up device is deactivated, the clock and data buses are driven by the external resistors connected thereto at a data rate lower than the data rate during the first mode.

Protected Dual-Voltage Microcircuit Power Arrangement

View page
US Patent:
6700763, Mar 2, 2004
Filed:
Jan 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/351129
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing S.A. - Boulogne
International Classification:
H02H 900
US Classification:
361 56, 361 18, 361 58, 361118
Abstract:
A microcircuit includes core and other portions, which receive different supply voltages from disparate sources. An electrostatic discharge protection (ESD) circuit internally connects the lower and higher voltage terminals together with a diode, poled so that the diode conducts if the nominally lower voltage supply exceeds the higher voltage supply. If the high voltage supply fails or even drops below the value of the low voltage supply, the diode conducts, and current is drawn in an amount which may overheat the microcircuit. A shut-down circuit is provided for sensing the voltage of the higher-voltage source, and shutting down the lower-voltage source any time the higher-voltage source drops below either the actual voltage or nominal voltage of the lower value source.

Parallel Coupled Standby Power Supplies Providing Plural Outputs

US Patent:
6838861, Jan 4, 2005
Filed:
Dec 18, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/739198
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing, S.A. - Boulogne-Billancourt
International Classification:
G05F 1577
US Classification:
323267, 323269
Abstract:
A power supply for a television apparatus comprises a source of energizing potential (5. 2V) fed to first and second control transistors (Q, Q). The first control transistor outputs a first source, while the second control transistor outputs a second source. The two control transistors are controlled by a feedback type voltage regulator (U) so that the sources track each other. The feedback voltage regulator is controlled by the second source. A storage capacitor (C) is coupled to the first source through an isolating resistor (R).

Apparatus And Method For Sharing Signal Control Lines

View page
US Patent:
6870578, Mar 22, 2005
Filed:
Dec 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/024981
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing SA. - Boulogne Cedex
International Classification:
H04N005/44
US Classification:
348725, 348730, 348719
Abstract:
An apparatus such as a television signal receiver includes first and second circuit boards. The first circuit board includes a first device such as a memory, and control circuitry for controlling at least one function of the apparatus. The second circuit board is operably coupled to the first circuit board via control lines. The second circuit board includes a controller for generating first and second control signals. The control lines transmit the first control signals from the controller to the first device when the apparatus is in a first operational state, and transmit the second control signals from the controller to the control circuitry when the apparatus is in a second operational state.

Method And Apparatus For Preventing Data Corruption From Video Related Enhancements

View page
US Patent:
6972806, Dec 6, 2005
Filed:
Dec 21, 2000
Appl. No.:
10/204737
Inventors:
Thomas David Gurley - Indianapolis IN, US
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing - Boulogne-Billancourt
International Classification:
H04N005/268
H04N009/77
US Classification:
348705, 348465, 348663
Abstract:
An apparatus and a method for processing auxiliary data included in a video signal, in particular auxiliary data included in the vertical blanking interval of a television signal. The present invention recognizes that comb filtering of a television signal before processing the auxiliary data included in the television signal may cause corruption of the data. The present invention overcomes the problems associated with the data corruption by placing the takeoff point for the auxiliary data at a point in the signal path prior to the comb filtering. In an exemplary embodiment, the present invention also provides for switching between one of a plurality of signal sources while ensuring that the signal provided to an auxiliary data processor corresponds to the displayed signal and minimizing the additional hardware and software required with regard to prior art arrangements.

Minimizing Video Disturbance During Switching Transients And Signal Absence

View page
US Patent:
6982765, Jan 3, 2006
Filed:
Aug 15, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/222001
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN, US
Ronald Thomas Keen - Indianapolis IN, US
Mark Alan Nierzwick - Brownsburg IN, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing - Billancourt
International Classification:
H04N 3/24
US Classification:
348634, 348569, 348565
Abstract:
A television monitor display comprises a first selectable source of a first video display signal and a second selectable source of a second signal for video display. A video processor receives signals from the first and second selectable sources and controllably combines the second signal with said first video display signal. A sync separator is coupled to receive the combined signal and generate therefrom separated synchronizing signals. A controller is responsive to user selection of the first selectable source and generates a disable signal for controlling the video processor to inhibit combining of the second signal for a predetermined time.

Bus Operation With Integrated Circuits In An Unpowered State

View page
US Patent:
7006161, Feb 28, 2006
Filed:
May 31, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/296789
Inventors:
William John Testin - Indianapolis IN, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing - Boulogne-Billancourt
International Classification:
H04N 5/63
US Classification:
348730, 348721, 348719, 714 25, 714 22, 710100
Abstract:
A circuit configuration applicable to systems such as consumer electronics devices enables communication between components such as integrated circuits connected to the bus. According to an embodiment, the RUN power supplies are turned to an OFF state in response to a fault condition. An interface circuit associated with an integrated circuit coupled to the bus controls the loading on the bus caused by the interface circuit and the integrated circuit such that communication between devices on the bus can continue. Therefore, even when a fault condition results in the loss of the RUN power supplies, a command can be transmitted over the bus from a first integrated circuit in a powered state to a second integrated circuit in the powered state while a third integrated circuit connected to the bus is in an unpowered state.
