Intermittent, Low Bandwidth, Wireless Data Network And Method Of Operation Thereof

View page
US Patent:
6980790, Dec 27, 2005
Filed:
Nov 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/723265
Inventors:
William R. Rohrbach - Towaco NJ, US
Nitin J. Shah - Cupertino CA, US
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04M011/04
US Classification:
4554041, 34053916, 34053917
Abstract:
For use in a wireless voice network, an alarm system and method of operation thereof. In one embodiment, the alarm system includes: (1) a local transceiver that, in response to a received stimulus, establishes an out-of-band wireless link of diminished bandwidth to a wireless central monitoring station in the wireless voice network and (2) a local controller, coupled to the transceiver for bidirectional communication therewith, that receives commands from the wireless central monitoring station via the wireless link.

System And Method For Employing A Telecommunications Network To Remotely Disable A Sim Or Smartcard

View page
US Patent:
58987835, Apr 27, 1999
Filed:
Nov 14, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/748843
Inventors:
William R. Rohrbach - Towaco NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies, Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04L 900
US Classification:
380 49
Abstract:
In a smartcard having a subscriber identity module ("SIMI") that cooperates with a mobile station to effect communication with a telecommunications network, a system for, and method of, disabling the smartcard. The system includes: (1) data commnications circuitry that transmits a code uniquely identifying the smartcard from logic circuitry within the smartcard to the telecommunications network via the mobile station, the code employable by the telecommunications network to search a disable database associated therewith, the telecommunications network returning a disable command if the code is found in the disable database and (2) disabling circuitry that incapacitates the logic circuitry to prevent an operation thereof, the smartcard being incapacitated with respect to the telecommunications network and systems independent of the telecommunications network.

Venturi Nozzle For Air Guns

View page
US Patent:
40264742, May 31, 1977
Filed:
Jan 22, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/651383
Inventors:
Ralph H. Knauer - Clifton NJ
William R. Rohrbach - Lincoln Park NJ
Assignee:
Western Electric Company, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
B05B 730
US Classification:
239430
Abstract:
A venturi nozzle for air guns includes an elongated, cylindrically shaped tube having a restricted orifice in a compressed air receiving end thereof through which compressed air is passed into a discharge end thereof. The air flow area of the discharge end of the tube is greater than the air flow area of the orifice to allow expansion of the air exiting the orifice in a region of the discharge end of the tube adjacent the orifice. Apertures formed through the tube in the discharge end thereof adjacent the orifice permit ambient air to be drawn by venturi effect into the tube and to be discharged with the expanded air out of the discharge end of the tube. It has been discovered that when the apertures are positioned around the circumference of the tube at nondiametrically opposed positions, and have a length along the axis of the tube which is greater than the width of the apertures around the circumference of the tube, the volume of air output from the discharge end of the nozzle is maximized for a given volume of compressed air input to the receiving end of the nozzle. Furthermore, it has also been found that when the ends of the apertures along the lengths thereof are tapered at an acute angle relative to the axis of the tube toward the receiving end thereof, the volume of air output from the discharge end of the nozzle is further maximized and the noise generated by air passing through the nozzle is minimized.

Mode-Indicating Mechanisms For Push-Button Operated Devices

View page
US Patent:
42874017, Sep 1, 1981
Filed:
Nov 16, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/095113
Inventors:
William R. Rohrbach - Towaco NJ
Assignee:
Western Electric Company, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
G09F 900
H01H 900
US Classification:
200308
Abstract:
An indicating button 10 for a push-push actuated device 11 (e. g. , a switch) is mountable on the device's plunger 20 which controls the "on" and "off" states of the device. Button 20 comprises a hollow casing 25 in which is rotatably mounted a quasi-spherical indicator 50 having two surface portions 101, 102 of different appearance which are selectively viewable through a plano-convex lens 90 in the top of the casing at different angular positions of the indicator. The indicator is driven to these different positions at "in" and "out" positions of plunger 20 by a resilient crank arm 70 coupling indicator 50 and device 11 and adapted by resilient bending to convert linear "in" and "out" movements of button 10 and plunger 20 into rotary movements of the indicator.
