High Efficiency Regenerative Piezoelectric Drive Amplifier

View page
US Patent:
20020136418, Sep 26, 2002
Filed:
Jun 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/885919
Inventors:
Wayne Zavis - Clarksville MD, US
Wayne Shanks - , US
International Classification:
H04R003/00
H03F021/00
US Classification:
381/114000, 381/120000, 381/173000, 381/174000
Abstract:
The present circuit is for a resonant, regenerative switching piezomotor drive amplifier that efficiently converts electrical energy into mechanical work through a piezoelectric actuator. The actuator driver of the present invention drives the real work-producing part of the system load over a broad range of frequencies from DC to several kHz, dramatically increasing the system power efficiency and full power bandwidth. The gains in efficiency are obtained by operating the motor/amplifier system at both electrical and mechanical resonances for the system. The amplifier's efficiency is greater than 80% when driving a 1 F piezoelectric load with a 500 V peak-to-peak signal. The available output power is greater than 20 watts continuously from DC to 2.0 kHz. The resonant, switching regenerative piezomotor drive amplifier described herein not only drives high voltage piezoelectric actuators, but will also serve equally well in any application that requires high power drive signals to be applied to a predominantly capacitive load.

Universal Electric Motor Speed Sensing By Using Fourier Transform Method

View page
US Patent:
45271011, Jul 2, 1985
Filed:
Nov 23, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/554571
Inventors:
Wayne Zavis - Randallstown MD
David A. Saar - Timonium MD
Assignee:
Black & Decker Inc. - Newark DE
International Classification:
G06F 15332
H02K 2364
US Classification:
318245
Abstract:
An indirect speed sensor for an electric motor, such as an electric motor of the universal type, provides for a resistive element in series with the motor windings so that current pertubations that occur as a consequence of armature rotation are manifested as speed-dependent voltage signals across the resistive element. The voltage signals are amplified and filtered to remove frequency components above and below the expected signal spectrum and then provided to an analog-to-digital converter that converts the filtered analog signal to digital values that are stored in a memory. A stored-program controlled microprocessor analyzes the stored digital information by performing a fast Fourier transform to provide an equivalent amplitude spectrum. The maximum amplitude spectral component is then identified to determine the speed of the motor.

Cable With Led Connection Indicator And Methods Of Using Same

US Patent:
20140210631, Jul 31, 2014
Filed:
Jan 13, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/153997
Inventors:
- Irvine CA, US
WAYNE ZAVIS - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Assignee:
Meggitt (Orange County), Inc. - Irvine CA
International Classification:
G08B 5/36
G01R 5/28
US Classification:
34081545, 324109, 324 7611
Abstract:
An interconnection verification means for sensors and a software implementation of interconnection verification between cabling and sensors in large, multi-channel test configurations are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment the sensor assembly comprises a sensor and an indicator electrically connected inline with the sensor. In a preferred embodiment the indicator is an LED. In an even more preferred embodiment, the sensor is an IEPE.
