Filed:
Aug 18, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/643111
Inventors:
Vipul B. Patel - Upper Holland PA, US
John W. Callahan - Broomfield CO, US
Assignee:
Time Warner Interactive Video Group, Inc. - Stamford CT
International Classification:
G06F 3/00
G06F 13/00
H04N 5/445
H04N 7/173
H04N 7/16
US Classification:
725 58, 725 88, 725 89, 725102, 725135, 725136
Abstract:
A resident application and a second application are provided in a set-top terminal to receive a TV broadcast service and network personal video recorder (NPVR) service, respectively. The resident application is suspended in favor of the second application when a user changes from a broadcast channel to an NPVR enabled channel, and vice versa. In an embodiment where a digital video recorder (DVR) set-top terminal is used, a DVR server therein provides trick mode functions (pause, rewind and fast-forward) before an NPVR session, e. g. , a Look Back session, is established. In another embodiment, during an NPVR session the DVR server plays back recorded programming content downloaded from a communications network, and provides trick mode functions as well.

View page
US Patent:
8396055, Mar 12, 2013
Filed:
Oct 20, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/582653
Inventors:
Vipul Patel - Upper Holland PA, US
Scott Miller - Doylestown PA, US
Mehul Shah - Lansdale PA, US
Jian Yu - Warrington PA, US
Assignee:
Time Warner Cable Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
H04L 12/66
US Classification:

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for providing unified access to interactive media applications and services in a network. In one embodiment, the network comprises a content-based network such as a cable television or satellite network, and the applications are disposed at the network headend. A servlet is provided to facilitate communication between the applications and client devices. The servlet acts as a proxy for applications utilizing a different content format than the client devices. The applications obtain data from e. g. , an internet host server via a gateway device. The client application(s) may comprise Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) pages, and are configured so as to permit use via a common interface (e. g. , the user's set top box and television display). These client applications enable a user to, for example, search the internet for data relating to displayed content, post and navigate micro-blogs, instant messaging or SMS, making telephone calls (e. g.

Enhanced Display Of World Wide Web Pages On Television

View page
US Patent:
20020069411, Jun 6, 2002
Filed:
Dec 6, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/731262
Inventors:
Mario Rainville - Doylestown PA, US
Vipul Patel - Langhorne PA, US
Assignee:
Liberate Technologies, MoreCom Division, Inc.
International Classification:
H04N005/445
H04N007/173
US Classification:
725/037000, 725/131000, 725/109000, 725/110000
Abstract:
A system for enhancing the display of World Wide Web pages combined with television video signals on a TV screen includes enhanced display modes. In a first embodiment, the viewer controls the transparency of a Picture-In-Picture image (PIP). A PIP image that normally covers up a part of the background image is made transparent so that the user can view the background image through the PIP image. Using transparency control, two same size images are simultaneously viewed whereby a full size background image and a full size foreground image simultaneously occupy the full television video screen. In a second embodiment of enhanced display of television video and World Wide Web graphics, a television video Picture-In-Graphics (PIG) image is imbedded as an object in an HTML Web page. When the HTML Web page is displayed as a background image and scrolled (or panned), the television video PIG image scrolls along with the HTML Web page background image. In such manner, the smaller PIG image does not cover up an important part of the larger background graphics image.

System And Method For Sharing Digital Images Over A Content-Based Network

View page
US Patent:
20100023979, Jan 28, 2010
Filed:
Jul 25, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/179650
Inventors:
Vipul Patel - Upper Holland PA, US
Scott Miller - Sweet Briar VA, US
Mehul Shah - Horsham PA, US
David Chen - Jamison PA, US
Assignee:
Time Warner Cable Inc. - Stamford CT
International Classification:
H04N 7/173
H04N 11/04
US Classification:
725 93, 3752402
Abstract:
A head end application server is coupled to a photo-sharing server having an Internet interface. A video content network is coupled to the head end application server, and a terminal is coupled to the video content network at a location remote from the head end application server and the photo-sharing server. The photo-sharing server is configured to accept upload of digital still images via the Internet interface, and the digital still images are in a format other than MPEG I-frames. The head end application server is configured to receive a request from the terminal and, responsive to the request, to fetch the digital still images from the photo-sharing server, transcode the digital still images into MPEG I-frames, and make the MPEG I-frames available, over the video content network, for selective display via the terminal. The system can advantageously function without use of a video-on-demand server.
