Appl. No.:
7/627154
Inventors:
Pranab Bagchi - Webster NY
James L. Edwards - Rochester NY
Danuta Gibson - Watfords, GB
Thomas A. Rosiek - Honeoye Falls NY
Brian Thomas - Fairport NY
Vincent J. Flow - Kendall NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 7388
US Classification:
430449
Abstract:
This invention provides composition and method to overcome the very high viscosity of prior small-particle dispersions when admixed with gelatin in aqueous solution for coating a photographic film element. The invention is generally accomplished by the utilization of a second surfactant in the melt formulated by the admixture of the small-particle dispersion and the gelatin solution. The surfactants of this invention, that is, utilized to control the theology of such said melts, have the following general structure: ##STR1## wherein n=5 to 20 and x=1 to 4.

Microprecipitation Process For Dispersing Photographic Filter Dyes

View page
US Patent:
56244673, Apr 29, 1997
Filed:
Dec 20, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/812503
Inventors:
John Texter - Rochester NY
William B. Travis - Holcomb NY
Vincent J. Flow - Kendall NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 100
US Classification:
23295R
Abstract:
A process is provided for preparing microprecipitated dispersions of filter dyes by preparing a concentrated slurry in aqueous medium of a filter dye having ionizable acid sites on the dye molecule, adding sufficient aqueous hydroxide to dissolve the filter dye, acidifying the solution with a stoichiometric amount of acidic protons to reprotonate up to 100% of the total ionizable acid sites on the dye molecule and provide a microprecipitated dispersion of the filter dye that is insoluble in aqueous media at pH values less than 3 but soluble in aqueous media at pH greater than 10.

Continuous Manufacture Of Gelled Microprecipitated Dispersion Melts

View page
US Patent:
53858123, Jan 31, 1995
Filed:
Dec 28, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/996949
Inventors:
Pranab Bagchi - Webster NY
James T. Beck - Rochester NY
Vincent J. Flow - Kendall NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 526
US Classification:
430449
Abstract:
The invention discloses a continuous method of manufacture of gelled dispersion melts of "small-particle" microprecipitated photographic agents. The continuous melt manufacturing process of this invention provides dispersion melts that are invariant in agent concentration, melt viscosity, and turbidity as a function of the run time and are also very reproducible and robust in repetitive preparations. Many photographic melts of this invention exhibit high photographic activity and light stability of the agents when exposed to light.

Photographic Elements Containing Pyrazolone Couplers And Process

View page
US Patent:
52622924, Nov 16, 1993
Filed:
Apr 23, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/872577
Inventors:
Sundaram Krishnamurthy - Rochester NY
Thomas A. Rosiek - Honeoye Falls NY
Vincent J. Flow - Kendall NY
David S. Bailey - Rochester NY
David J. Giacherio - Rochester NY
John L. Pawlak - Rochester NY

Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 7384
US Classification:
430555
Abstract:
Pyrazolone magenta dye-forming couplers having a particular arylthio coupling-off group enhance the photographic properties and improve the manufacturing and handling characteristics of materials and processes employing such couplers. The coupler contains an N-phenyl group, a 3-anilino group and a 4-(arylthio) coupling off group containing a particular aryloxymethylacylamino group as an ortho substituent. A broad range of improvements are realized including stability, reactivity, hue, and dye density in addition to simplified and safer manufacture. The coupler may be represented by the following formula where the substituents and variables are as defined in the specification: ##STR1##.

Abstract:
A stabilized photographic dispersion is prepared by adding a hydrophobic, photographically inert compound which has a logP. sub. (calc) greater than about 9 and does not solidify or gel the dispersed phase to a photographic dispersion comprising an aqueous medium and a dispersed liquid organic phase comprising a photographically useful compound which is (i) soluble in organic solvents, (ii) substantially insoluble in water, and (iii) subject to particle growth of at least 10% of its initial particle size when maintained in said dispersion in the absence of the added photographically inert compound.

Oxygen Barrier Coated Photographic Agent Milled Dispersion Particles For Enhanced Dye-Stability

View page
US Patent:
55653090, Oct 15, 1996
Filed:
Aug 18, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/292646
Inventors:
Pranab Bagchi - Webster NY
Vincent J. Flow - Kendall NY
Alberto M. Martinez - Rochester NY
Assignee:
Eastman Kodak Company - Rochester NY
International Classification:
G03C 518
G03C 526
US Classification:
430449
Abstract:
The invention creates a selective oxygen barrier around individual coupler or other photographically active particles by surrounding each particle with a layer of water applicable oxygen barrier polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which will also act as a steric barrier to coalescence of the particles. Photographic products formed with such materials are more dye stable. The dispersions of this invention are prepared by mechanical milling or homogenization procedures.
