Tubular Running Tool

View page
US Patent:
6431626, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Feb 11, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/502898
Inventors:
Vernon J. Bouligny - New Iberia LA
Assignee:
Frankis Casing Crew and Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 3120
US Classification:
294 8625, 294 8615, 1661774
Abstract:
An improved tubular running tool and method is disclosed for use on a rotary or top drive drilling rig of the type for inserting and selectively, internally gripping a tubular which may be utilized to lift, lower, rotate, and torque tubulars, and which may be used to fill and/or circulate fluid in and through tubulars and to cement tubulars within a wellbore. The internal tubular running tool may be used as or in conjunction with fill-up and circulating tools and with cementing head wiper plug assemblies among other tools. The tubular running tool includes an improved moving mechanism having a cylindrical pneumatic chamber annularly positioned with respect to a barrel element that forms an axial fluid pathway therethrough. A cylindrical piston is moveable within the cylindrical chamber to thereby move a cylindrical piston rod connected to gripping slips such that the slips selectively engage an interior portion of a tubular member.

Apparatus For Gripping Oilfield Tubulars Without Causing Damage To Such Tubulars

US Patent:
6488323, Dec 3, 2002
Filed:
Dec 14, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/460576
Inventors:
Vernon Bouligny - New Iberia LA
Assignee:
Franks Casing Crew and Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
B66C 146
US Classification:
2941193, 269 22
Abstract:
An apparatus for gripping tubular members in a single or multi-string arrangement about their outer diameter without causing surface damage or structural deformation to the tubular members, so that they may be axially rotated or secured against axial rotation. A generally cylindrical internal sleeve is contained within a molded flexible liner. One side of the internal sleeve is releasably attached to the flexible liner, forming an annular bladder-like structure within the flexible liner. Introduction of pressure into the bladder-like structure causes the flexible liner to inflate radially inward causing the flexible liner and torque transmitting bushing to thereby grip the tubular work piece within the new improved friction grip. Movable anti-extrusion rings at the axial edges of the flexible liner prevent deformation of the liner into the annular space between the outer sleeve of the new improved friction grip and the tubular, and also prevent wear between the axial edges of the liner and the edges of the outer sleeve. An additional, non-rigid sleeve, or coating, of friction enhancing material may be placed on the inner face of the torque transmitting bushing to increase the frictional characteristics of the new improved friction grip and/or increase service life of the surface of the torque transmitting bushing.

Collar Load Support System And Method

View page
US Patent:
6651737, Nov 25, 2003
Filed:
Jan 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/769044
Inventors:
Vernon J. Bouligny - New Iberia LA
Scott J. Arceneaux - Lafayette LA
Assignee:
Franks Casing Crew and Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 304
US Classification:
166 52, 166 85, 166203, 166423, 464163, 464176
Abstract:
A wellbore tubular handling system and method is provided for operation in holding and lowering tubulars, such as tubing strings, casing strings, pipe strings, and the various components thereof, at a rig site. The handling system utilizes a shock table with a compressible support surface that compressively moves with a selected compression rate in response to the weight of the wellbore tubular string. The shock table preferably has a shock table body mounted below the rig floor and may conveniently replace the rotary table master bushing except for a flange which supports the shock table on the rig floor. A split-sectioned landing spear can be split open to an open position to thereby allow large items such as collars or other string components to pass through the shock table. In a closed position, the landing spear supports, preferably indirectly, an upper collar of the wellbore tubular string to thereby support the weight of the wellbore tubular string and apply the weight to the compressible support surface of the shock table.

Top Feed Of Control Lines To Table-Elevated Spider

View page
US Patent:
7367403, May 6, 2008
Filed:
Jan 9, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/328208
Inventors:
Charles Michael Webre - Lafayette LA, US
Brian Begnaud - Youngsville LA, US
Vernon Bouligny - New Iberia LA, US
Assignee:
Frank's Casing Crew & Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 19/00
US Classification:
166379, 166 771
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for installing control lines and pipe into a well. The pipe-holding spider that is normally mounted on the rig floor is supported by a table elevated above the rig floor. Supporting the spider on an elevated table provides personnel with access to a portion of the length of the pipe string below the elevated spider and above the rig floor for applying a fastener to secure the control line to the pipe string. The control line is supplied from above the spider and is positioned by a control line guide supported on the spider or a sleeve to pass through the spider outside the path of the pipe gripping members, such as slips.

System For Running Oilfield Tubulars Into Wellbores And Method For Using Same

US Patent:
7503394, Mar 17, 2009
Filed:
Jun 8, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/147525
Inventors:
Vernon J. Bouligny - New Iberia LA, US
Assignee:
Frank's Casing & Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 19/20
E21B 19/15
US Classification:
166380, 166 7751, 166 7753, 166 851, 414 2254
Abstract:
A four-cornered, open frame, connected either to a top drive or to a traveling block, has an elevator at its lower end used to support the weight of the tubular string, and has a mud tool, a stabber, a guide, a spinner, a tong, a stabbing guide and a backup tong carried by the frame. A manipulator arm picks up a horizontal tubular, manipulates the tubular to vertical, and moves the tubular into the interior of the frame, allowing the tubular to be made up in the string while the string is being lowered into the wellbore.

Appl. No.:
11/371742
Inventors:
Charles Michael Webre - Lafayette LA, US
Vernon Joseph Bouligny - New Iberia LA, US
Brian David Begnaud - Youngsville LA, US
Mark Stephen Sibille - Lafayette LA, US
Assignee:
Frank's Casing Crew and Rental Tools, Inc. - Lafayette LA
International Classification:
E21B 19/22
US Classification:
166379, 166 771
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for installing control lines and pipe into a well. The pipe-holding spider that is normally mounted on the rig floor is adapted for easy disassembly and reassembly when the pipe slips within the spider are not engaged with the outer surface of the pipe string so that upon disassembly, a control line guide becomes vertically movable. The control line guide is adapted for being controllably elevated to a distance above the rig floor, thereby providing personnel access to a portion of the length of the pipe string below the elevated control line guide and above the rig floor for securing control line to the pipe string using a fastener.
