US Patent:
7152034, Dec 19, 2006
Filed:
Dec 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/323964
Inventors:
Terrence V. Layng - Seattle WA, US
Kent R. Johnson - Seattle WA, US
Victoria Ford - Seattle WA, US
Michael P. Layng - Seattle WA, US
Marilyn R. Gilbert - Bainbridge Island WA, US
Gregory Stikeleather - Palo Alto CA, US
Assignee:
Headsprout, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G09B 17/00
G09B 19/04
US Classification:
704270, 434178, 434185
Abstract:
A method and system provides procedures/routines to teach certain repertoires, such as reading, to learners without a teacher present. The various routines can be provided or implemented via a computer network, such as the Internet, so that multiple learners can access and use the routines. Feedback features take into account that the Internet is a medium where it is difficult to directly monitor the learner's activities during the course of various lessons provided by the routines. The routines may be implemented in a sequence of episodes, with each episode systematically building on the particular skills learned in a prior episode. Some of these routines include establishing routines, adduction routines, potentiating routines, composite routines, sequential composite routines, fluency routines, motivation routines, application routines, and the overall sequencing of these routines.

US Patent:
20100021871, Jan 28, 2010
Filed:
Jul 24, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/509387
Inventors:
Terrence V. Layng - Seattle WA, US
Victoria Ford - Seattle WA, US
Marta E. Leon - Seattle WA, US
Hirofumi Shimizu - Seattle WA, US
Melinda S. Sota - Seattle WA, US
Janet S. Twyman - New York NY, US
International Classification:
G09B 17/00
US Classification:
434178
Abstract:
A creation system and method for creating routines for teaching comprehension are described. The system identifies the skill to be taught, determines one or more features for the identified skill and determines a sequence of routines based on the determined one or more features. A performance system and method for performing the determined routines are also described. The performance system identifies the skill to be taught, determines the sequence of routines for the skill and presents the sequence to the learners. The performance system also provides feedback to the learners for their responses and modifies the sequence of routines based of the learners' responses.

US Patent:
20130167707, Jul 4, 2013
Filed:
Dec 28, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/730334
Inventors:
Paul T. Andronis - Marquette MI, US
Melinda Sota - Seattle WA, US
Nathan Rollins - Seattle WA, US
Nattapong Thangvijit - Seattle WA, US
Terrence Layng - Seattle WA, US
Marta Leon - Seattle WA, US
Jay Thompson - Seattle WA, US
Nathan Scone - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
HeadSprout, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G09B 15/00
US Classification:
84470 R, 463 9
Abstract:
A system and method for teaching a user to discriminate and match musical pitch is disclosed. A pitch module generates a first melodic sequence for a user. The pitch module generates at least two symbolically depicted sequences including a first symbolic sequence that represents a pitch frequency that, when played, matches the first melodic sequence. A tracking module receives a selection of the first symbolic sequence and advances to a next level in response to receiving the selection of the first symbolic sequence.
