Portable Communications And Data Terminal Having Multiple Modes Of Operation

View page
US Patent:
6434395, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Dec 18, 1996
Appl. No.:
08/769036
Inventors:
Michael L. Lubin - Del Mar CA
Seton P. Kasmir - San Diego CA
Kathryn A. Kubasak - Carlsbad CA
Gregory A. Hein - Encinitas CA
Surendra B. Mandava - San Jose CA
Chanchai Poonpol - San Diego CA
Shahin Hedayat - San Ramon CA
Donald W. Burtis - Los Altos CA
Assignee:
Pacific Communications Sciences, Inc. - CA
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455466, 455553, 375216
Abstract:
A portable radio telephone handset includes the capability of operating as a data transfer terminal as well as an analog cellular telephone subscriber station. Two modes of operation are available in the handset, an analog cellular communication mode and a Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) mode. A paging function for incoming analog cellular communication is carried out on a CDPD channel. The handset distinguishes between paging signals identifying CDPD mode communications and paging signals identifying analog cellular communications. The handset automatically preempts CDPD communications in favor of analog cellular communications such as those carried out in an AMPS configuration.

Assignee:
BROADCOM CORPORATION - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H04B 15/00
US Classification:
455418, 4555501
Abstract:
Various methods and systems are provided for space, frequency and time domain coexistence of RF signals. In one example, among others, a communication device includes a coexistence manager capable of monitoring operating conditions of a cellular modem and a coexistence assistant capable of monitoring operating conditions of a wireless connectivity unit. The coexistence manager is capable of modifying operation of the modem and/or unit based on an operating condition change. In another example, a method includes detecting a change in antenna isolation and/or operating temperature of a FE filter, determining filtering characteristics of the FE filter based at least in part upon the change, and modifying communications of coexisting communication protocols based at least in part upon the filtering characteristics. In another example, a TX/RX configuration for coexisting communication protocols is determined and communications in a protocol is modified based at least in part upon the TX/RX configuration.

Multiprocessor System For Digital Signal Processing

View page
US Patent:
63276488, Dec 4, 2001
Filed:
May 7, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/852842
Inventors:
Shahin Hedayat - San Ramon CA
Surendra Mandava - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Cirrus Logic, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
G06F 900
US Classification:
712 35
Abstract:
A novel multi-DSP system allows a main DSP to operate concurrently with an auxiliary DSP for implementing a filter algorithm. The main DSP and auxiliary DSP have separate program memories but share the same data memory. The auxiliary DSP program memory is mapped to the main DSP program memory to allow the main DSP to download filter process instructions from its program memory into the auxiliary DSP program memory. The auxiliary DSP fetches the instructions from its program memory to execute them. The auxiliary DSP is prevented from access to the shared data its program memory when this memory is occupied by the main DSP. An arbitration mechanism gives the auxiliary DSP access to the data memory only when the main DSP is not using this memory.

Selective Shadowing Of Registers For Interrupt Processing

View page
US Patent:
56425163, Jun 24, 1997
Filed:
Oct 14, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/324077
Inventors:
Shahin Hedayat - San Ramon CA
Surendra Mandava - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Cirrus Logic, Inc. - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G06F 1332
G06F 1324
US Classification:
395733
Abstract:
Interrupts are prioritized such that selected interrupts use shadow registers to save the current state of the machine, whereas other interrupts use a software implemented interrupt service routine (ISR) to save and restore the current machine state. Hence, the number of nested interrupts that can be serviced will not be limited to the depth of register shadowing.

Adsl Integrated Line Card With Digital Splitter And Pots Codec Without Bulky Analog Splitter

View page
US Patent:
58898565, Mar 30, 1999
Filed:
May 22, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/862127
Inventors:
Anthony J. P. O'Toole - San Jose CA
Shahin Hedayat - San Ramon CA
Surendra Babu Mandava - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Centillium Technology Corp. - Fremont CA
International Classification:
H04M 900
H04J 312
US Classification:
379399
Abstract:
An integrated line-card terminates an asymmetric digital-subscriber line (ADSL) copper-pair at a single point in a central office. The line card contains analog line circuitry such as a ring generator, off-hook detector, D. C. current feed, and a single analog-digital (A/D) converter. The phone line carries a composite signal of both the high-frequency ADSL data and the low-frequency voice or plain-old-telephone-service (POTS) signal. Instead of using an analog frequency-splitter with bulky, expensive inductor coils, a digital splitter is used. A digital-signal processor (DSP) can be used to perform the digital splitting of ADSL and POTS. The waveforms from the analog phone line are first converted to digital values by the A/D converter, and then a digital splitter separates the low-frequency POTS from the high-frequency ADSL. The ADSL data is formatted by the DSP for a data pathway to the Internet, while the POTS data is converted by the DSP to A-Law or C-Law for transmission over the telephone network's PCM highway. The DSP can perform all decoding, encoding, compression, and formatting needed by both ADSL and POTS.
