System And Method For Allowing Coexistence Of Multiple Pci Managers In A Pci Express System

View page
US Patent:
7603500, Oct 13, 2009
Filed:
Aug 10, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/837073
Inventors:
Surender Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 13/00
US Classification:
710104, 710 8, 709220
Abstract:
A system and method that allows a plurality of SR-PCIMs to operate within a PCIe fabric. The system and method describe a master SR-PCIM election process and transfer of mastership from a master SR-PCIM to a standby SR-PCIM under certain conditions. The system and method leverage the PCI configuration space and PCI messages so that SR-PCIMs from multiple vendors can potentially interoperate.

Enabling Efficient Input/Output (I/O) Virtualization

US Patent:
8176501, May 8, 2012
Filed:
Jun 23, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/474173
Inventors:
Ramkrishna V. Prakash - Austin TX, US
Surender V. Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 3/00
G06F 9/44
G06F 9/46
G06F 13/00
US Classification:
719317
Abstract:
A method for virtualizing input/output whereby a back-end driver component running back-end in a privileged operating system address space configures an input/output adapter through a setup/control path is disclosed. The back-end driver component is used to register with the input/output adapter to allow for the receipt of information concerning a catastrophic event. Catastrophic event data is transmitted to an active front-end driver component running in a guest operating system address space, where a communication path was established between the active front-end driver component and the back-end driver component. The back-end driver component listens for requests from the active front-end driver component. Upon receipt, an input/output context association is established between an input/output context in the input/output adapter and the active front-end driver component. The association enables the guest operating system to perform an isolated input/output operation directly with the input/output adapter through a respective data input/output path.

Host-Based Messaging Framework For Pcie Device Management

US Patent:
8370534, Feb 5, 2013
Filed:
Dec 3, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/630183
Inventors:
Mukund P. Khatri - Austin TX, US
Surender V. Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products, LP - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 3/00
G06F 9/00
US Classification:
710 8, 710 9, 710 10, 710 11, 710 12, 710 13, 710 14, 710104, 713 1, 713 2, 713100
Abstract:
A method of routing data in an information handling system can include receiving a notification from a management controller at a basic input/output system (BIOS) that includes a system management interrupt (SMI) handler. The a notification can indicate that the management controller has a data packet bound for a peripheral component interconnect express input/output (PCIe I/O) device coupled to a secondary processor. The method can include generating a system management interrupt at the information handling system via the BIOS SMI handler in response to the notification. The method can also include retrieving the data packet from the management controller via the BIOS SMI handler and sending a payload associated with the data packet from the BIOS SMI handler to the PCIe I/O device.

System And Method For Increased System Availability In Virtualized Environments

US Patent:
8412877, Apr 2, 2013
Filed:
May 24, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/479427
Inventors:
Mukund P. Khatri - Austin TX, US
Brent Alan Schroeder - Bee Cave TX, US
Surender Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
US Classification:
711 6, 711E12016
Abstract:
A method is provided for managing errors in a virtualized information handling system that includes an error detection system and a hypervisor allowing multiple virtual machines to run on the information handling system. The hypervisor may assign at least one memory region to each of multiple virtual machines. The error detection system may detect an error, determine a physical memory address associated with the error, and report that address to the hypervisor. Additionally, the hypervisor may determine whether the memory region assigned to each virtual machine includes the physical memory address associated with the error. The hypervisor may shut down each virtual machine for which a memory region assigned to that virtual machine includes the physical memory address associated with the error, and not shut down each virtual machine for which the memory regions assigned to that virtual machine do not include the physical memory address associated with the error.

System And Method For Distributed Address Translation In Virtualized Information Handling Systems

View page
US Patent:
8650342, Feb 11, 2014
Filed:
Oct 23, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/551832
Inventors:
Surender Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 13/12
US Classification:
710 62
Abstract:
Virtualization of I/O devices to support operation of plural virtual machines on a host information handling system is managed with distributed translation agents that translate addresses generated from I/O devices according to mapping defined by a virtual machine monitor. The translation agents reside in the host I/O subsystem, such as at I/O hubs or at I/O devices. A discovery module discovers and configures plural translation agents to coordinate I/O device communications with translation of physical memory addresses and virtual I/O addresses.

System And Method For Look-Aside Parity Based Raid

US Patent:
8650471, Feb 11, 2014
Filed:
Jun 28, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/170805
Inventors:
Gary B. Kotzur - Austin TX, US
Surender Brahmaroutu - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714800, 714773
Abstract:
Redundant storage of information is provided by distributing storage functions between a RAID controller and switching device. The switching device multi-casts writes to storage devices and to the RAID controller. The RAID controller generates parity for the information and writes the parity to the storage devices in space reserved for parity by the switching device. Information is read from the storage devices through the switching device without action by the RAID controller.
