Method For Adhering To Hard Tissue

View page
US Patent:
6482871, Nov 19, 2002
Filed:
Jun 5, 1995
Appl. No.:
08/464022
Inventors:
Steven M. Aasen - Lakeland MN
Joel D. Oxman - St. Louis Park MN
Sumita B. Mitra - West St. Paul MN
Jon W. Fundingsland - Maplewood MN
Assignee:
3M Innovative Properties Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
A61K 608
US Classification:
523116, 523118, 522103, 522104, 522 96, 522 90, 522 88, 522 48, 522 83, 522908, 428522
Abstract:
The invention provides a pretreatment method and primer that is applied directly to the hard tissue. The invention has particular utility for adhering to or coating sclerotic dentin and cervical enamel or for adhering to or coating hard tissue in a high humidity environment. The primer enables formation of extremely strong bonds to dentin. The method comprises the steps of: (a) applying to the hard tissue adhesively effective amounts of an acid and a water-dispersible film former comprising a polymer and (b) hardening the film former. Primer compositions are provided for use in this method, comprising a mixture of an acid and a film former comprising a polymer prior to hardening, the mixture being in the form of a film atop the hard tissue.

Dental Resin Cements Having Improved Handling Properties

US Patent:
6506816, Jan 14, 2003
Filed:
Jul 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
08/896549
Inventors:
Paula D. Ario - Woodbury MN
Steven M. Aasen - Woodbury MN
Brian N. Holmes - St. Paul MN
Assignee:
3M Innovative Properties Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
A61K 6087
US Classification:
523116, 4332281, 433215, 523115, 523118, 524556, 524559, 524533, 5263231
Abstract:
Dental resin cement materials having unique handling properties are provided that comprise a) filler, b) polymerizable resin, and c) a polymeric handling modifier that is dispersed in the polymerizable resin at 25Â C. and that has a molecular weight of between about 500 and 100,000. Components a) b) and c) are present in an amount effective to achieve a Viscosity vs Shear Rate Curve that fits a power law model of F(x)=A x. The correlation value of the material to this curve is greater than 0. 85 for both the increasing and decreasing shear rate curves, and the value of B is less than about -0. 01. Resin cements are also provided that comprise acid functionality and water, but which do not comprise an acid reactive filler. Such cements may be self etching, thereby avoiding the need to carry out a separate acid etch step.
