Furnace Configured For Use In Both The Galvannealing And Galvanizing Of A Metal Strip

View page
US Patent:
8025835, Sep 27, 2011
Filed:
Sep 6, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/850714
Inventors:
Mitrajyoti Deka - Crown Point IN, US
Stavros George Fountoulakis - Schererville IN, US
Ramachandra S. Patil - Munster IN, US
Assignee:
ArcelorMittal Investigación y Desarrollo, S.L. - Bizkaia
International Classification:
C21D 9/54
US Classification:
266103, 266252
Abstract:
A heat treatment or heat soak furnace for use in both galvannealing and galvanizing processes including a heating apparatus configured to supply heat and remove heat. The heating apparatus may draw hot air from the exhaust of a direct fire strip annealing furnace, gas burners or electric heat exchangers as necessary. The furnace also may include a plurality of cooling mechanisms in order to ensure heat is removed and the temperature within the furnace regulated. In addition, the furnace may include baffles configured to allow portions of the interior of the furnace to be separated into different temperature zones. The furnace under this invention is capable of providing a suitable thermal environment for a desired time, duration, for steel sheet substrates with different chemistries, different coating thicknesses and different process speeds to achieve an optimum phase microstructure of the galvannealed, zinc-iron alloy coating; or to promptly solidify the galvanizing unalloyed zinc coating so that it has a high quality surface morphology.

Chemical Post-Treatment Of Selectively Galvanized Steel Strip And Sheet

View page
US Patent:
47087790, Nov 24, 1987
Filed:
Oct 20, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/920635
Inventors:
Stavros G. Fountoulakis - Asbury NJ
Richard N. Steinbicker - Bethlehem PA
Daniel E. Hruskoci - Michigan City IN
Rajesh K. Singh - Bethlehem PA
Assignee:
Bethlehem Steel Corporation - Bethlehem PA
International Classification:
C25D 548
US Classification:
204 27
Abstract:
This invention is directed to a method of treating a selectively galvanized steel strip, such as one-side electrogalvanized sheet, to improve the appearance and paintability of the non-galvanized areas of said strip. The post chemical processing of the strip, which processing does not chemically attack the zink-coated areas of the strip, comprises the steps of applying to the strip a solution of an aqueous bifluoride salt, followed thereby by rinsing said strip with a dilute caustic solution.

Process For Improving The Formability And Weldability Properties Of Zinc Coated Sheet Steel

View page
US Patent:
56607075, Aug 26, 1997
Filed:
Dec 16, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/767379
Inventors:
C. Ramadeva Shastry - Bethlehem PA
Stavros G. Fountoulakis - Pattenburg NJ
Elmer J. Wendell - Bethlehem PA
Assignee:
Bethlehem Steel Corporation - Bethlehem PA
International Classification:
C25D 504
US Classification:
205141
Abstract:
A post plating or post coating method for improving formability and weldability properties in sheet steel product having a protective zinc or zinc alloy layer formed on at least one surface thereof. The steps of the method comprise immersing the sheet steel product into a bath containing at least zinc to apply the protective layer, removing the sheet steel product from the bath, the sheet steel product having a protective zinc or zinc alloy layer formed on at least one surface thereof, and applying an alkaline solution to the protective layer to form a zinc oxide layer thereon, the alkaline solution being applied at a location outside the bath.
