Appl. No.:
09/940830
Inventors:
Shawn R. Gettemy - San Jose CA
Kevin Lee - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Palm, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G02F 11335
US Classification:
362561, 362 31, 362 84, 349 63, 349 65, 349 71
Abstract:
A flat panel display system utilizing a light pipe having vapor deposited highly reflective material on a light pipe. The flat panel display may be used in a portable electronic device. One embodiment discloses deposition of a highly reflective material (e. g. , SiO2 or TiO2) around the non-viewing areas of a light pipe that provides light to the display screen. Front lighting embodiments and back lighting embodiments are described. One embodiment further discloses deposition of reflective material on the surface of microstructures of the light pipe to enhance light reflection and to prevent light escape. Another embodiment of the present invention discloses the coating or vapor deposition of phosphor material on the light pipe. This embodiment utilizes a blue light or IR light with the phosphor layer, to create a long lasting white light which is appealing for many portable electronic device displays.

Method And System For An Interchangeable Modular Display Screen For A Portable Computing Device

View page
US Patent:
6545862, Apr 8, 2003
Filed:
Jun 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/608823
Inventors:
Shawn Gettemy - San Jose CA
Neal Osborn - Milpitas CA
Joe Tate - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Palm, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 116
US Classification:
361683, 361686, D14106
Abstract:
A portable computer system (e. g. , a palmtop or hand-held computer system) is implemented with an interface module containing circuitry needed to connect with and operate a device such as a display device. The interface module is coupled to the display device. Additionally, the interface module may be coupled to a printed circuit (PC) board of the portable computer system. As such, PC board can thus be designed and manufactured independently of the display device. Furthermore, design variations in the display device can be independently accommodated in the interface module. Thus, the combination of the interface module, the device, and/or the PC board can be universally implemented in different designs of portable computer systems, reducing development time and manufacturing costs.

Method And Apparatus For User Selectable Display Mode For Intelligently Enhancing Battery Life

View page
US Patent:
6603469, Aug 5, 2003
Filed:
Aug 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/649999
Inventors:
Shawn Gettemy - San Jose CA
Anthony Kim - Sunnyvale CA
Assignee:
Palm, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G09G 500
US Classification:
345211, 345102
Abstract:
A method and system for enhancing the life of a battery within a portable or otherwise battery operated electronic device. The method and system provide user selectable display modes, e. g. , from color to monochrome, that can be changed in order to enhance the life of the devices battery. The monochrome display mode can be selected by the user when the battery level is detected below a predefined threshold. In one embodiment, the electronic device is a hand held computer system with a display device. When the battery level is detected as below a preselected level, a message is generated on the computer display screen. The message informs the user that the display mode of the screen can be changed to enhance the battery life. If selected, the display mode can change from color to monochrome thereby saving power because the monochrome display does not utilize a back-lighting element. In one embodiment, color sequential techniques are used to provide a flat panel color display.

Selectively Relocatable And Universal Interface Module With Circuitry For A Display Screen

View page
US Patent:
6618044, Sep 9, 2003
Filed:
May 25, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/579123
Inventors:
Shawn Gettemy - San Jose CA
Troy Hulick - Saratoga CA
Eric Fuhs - Crystal Lake IL
Frank Canova - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Palm Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G09G 500
US Classification:
345204, 361681, 361683
Abstract:
A portable computer system (e. g. , a palmtop or hand-held computer system) with a universal interface module containing circuitry needed to connect with and operate a device such as a display device. The interface module is coupled between the display device and a printed circuit board (e. g. , a central processing unit). The interface module can be coupled to the display device using a flexible circuit. In that case, the interface module is pivotable about the flexible circuit so that it can be positioned in different locations within the computer system, depending on space availability and the constraints of a particular computer system design. Thus, the combination of the interface module, the device, and/or the flexible circuit and can be universally implemented in different designs of portable computer systems, reducing development time and manufacturing costs.

Personal Digital Assistant Display Illumination Method And System

View page
US Patent:
6718115, Apr 6, 2004
Filed:
Sep 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/675909
Inventors:
Shawn Gettemy - San Jose CA
Rajiv Pethe - San Jose CA
Assignee:
palmOne, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G09F 1300
US Classification:
385147, 385901, 362551
Abstract:
The present invention system and method facilitates efficient and relatively even distribution of illumination throughout a display screen. The system and method also facilitates clearer presentation of images, size reductions and conservation of limited power resources in handheld computers. In one embodiment of the present invention, a display illumination distribution system includes a light pipe, a lens, a wave-guide array and a light source. The light sources provides light waves that are directed along the wave guide array to the lens which directs the light waves into the light pipe. The light pipe conveys the light to the display and provides illumination. The routing of light through the wave-guide array confines the light waves to a wave guide and reduces the number of light waves that miss the light pipe.
