Methods And Apparatus For Manufacturing Electronic And Electromechanical Elements And Devices By Thin-Film Deposition And Imaging

View page
US Patent:
6664027, Dec 16, 2003
Filed:
Jan 30, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/060151
Inventors:
Saul Griffith - Cambridge MA
Joseph M. Jacobson - Newton MA
Scott Manalis - Cambridge MA
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G03F 700
US Classification:
430311, 430325
Abstract:
Electrically (and, possibly, mechanically) active patterns are applied using a colloidal suspension of nanoparticles that exhibit a desired electrical characteristic. The nanoparticles are surrounded by an insulative shells that may be removed by therefrom by application of energy (e. g. , in the form of electromagnetic radiation or heat). The nanoparticle suspension is applied to a surface, forming a layer that is substantially insulative owing to the nanoparticle shells. The applied suspension is exposed to energy to remove the capping groups and fuse the particles into cohesion. If the nanoparticle suspension was deposited as a uniform film, the energy is applied in a desired pattern so that unexposed areas remain insulative while exposed areas exhibit the electrical behavior associated with the nanoparticles. If the nanoparticle suspension was deposited in a desired pattern, it may be uniformly exposed to energy. Additional layers may be applied in the same manner, one over the other, to form a multilayer device.

Lens Molding Apparatus And Related Methods

View page
US Patent:
7264755, Sep 4, 2007
Filed:
Jul 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/199007
Inventors:
Saul Griffith - Cambridge MA, US
Assignee:
Low Cost Eyesglasses, Inc. - Washington DC
International Classification:
B29D 11/00
US Classification:
264 11, 264 138, 264 25, 425808
Abstract:
An adjustable mold includes a distortable boundary, a flexible membrane, and a pressurizer, and method of use thereof. Pressure is applied to the flexible membrane, which causes the membrane to distort over the boundary. The shape of the boundary and the distortion of the flexible membrane control the optical characteristics of a lens resulting from the application and curing of a molding composition placed on the flexible membrane or to cast other items having variable shapes determined in part by the flexible membrane. In addition, a mold edge is used to allow casting in predetermined shapes, reducing need for grinding or edging. Visual and emission device calibration features used in conjunction with calibration reference images allow uniform selective distortion of the flexible membrane.

D02G 3/22
US Classification:
57238, 57264
Abstract:
A fibrous tension member comprises a plurality of structural threads and an indicator thread. The indicator thread modulates one or more electrical properties of the indicator thread based at least in part on the elongation of the indicator thread. A system for sensing elongation of a fibrous tension member comprises a plurality of structural threads, at least one indicator thread, and a sensing-processing device. The sensing-processing device is electrically connected to the at least one indicator thread to determine the elongation of the fibrous tension member.

Abstract:
A method of coupling a mechanical power source through an electrical power generator to an electrical load is disclosed. A characteristic of an electrical output is measured from the electrical power generator produced during a power generation cycle during which there is a coupling of the mechanical power source through the electrical power generator to the electrical load. The coupling of the mechanical power source is adjusted through the electrical power generator to the electrical load during a subsequent power generation cycle based at least in part on the measured characteristic of the electrical output.

US Patent:
7752830, Jul 13, 2010
Filed:
Feb 25, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/380310
Inventors:
Dan Goldwater - Emeryville CA, US
Saul Griffith - Emeryville CA, US
Eric Wilhelm - Oakland CA, US
Colin Bulthaup - Oakland CA, US
Assignee:
Makani Power, Inc. - Alameda CA
International Classification:
D02G 3/02
US Classification:
57238
Abstract:
A fibrous tension member includes a plurality of structural threads and two or more indicator threads. The two or more indicator threads are located with respect to the plurality of structural threads such that a differential elongation between the two or more indicator threads indicates a curvature. The differential elongation between the two or more indicator threads is measured using a change in one or more electrical properties of each of the two or more indicator threads as each of the two or more indicator threads changes in length. A fibrous tension member includes a plurality of structural threads and one or more indicator threads. Each of the one or more indicator threads is more sensitive to elongation in a region of length of the fibrous tension member. The elongation of the region associated with one of the one or more indicator threads is measured using a change in one or more electrical properties of one of the one or more indicator threads as one of the one or more indicator threads changes in length.
