Method For Green Sand Molding

View page
US Patent:
20120132391, May 31, 2012
Filed:
Jul 25, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/190070
Inventors:
Hiroyasu MAKINO - Toyokawa-shi, JP
Sam Ramrattan - Kalamazoo MI, US
Assignee:
Western Michigan University - Kalamazoo MI
SINTOKOGIO, LTD. - Nagoya-shi
International Classification:
B22C 9/02
B22C 1/00
US Classification:
164520, 164 15
Abstract:
The object of the present invention is to provide a method for green sand molding that prevents a bad casting by producing a mold that does not have a brittle surface. The method comprises the steps of filling the green sand into a flask while fluidizing the green sand by aeration at a pressure between 0.05 and 0.18 MPa, and squeezing the green sand that has been filled in the flask, wherein a mold is produced so that the friability of the mold is 10 or less. The friability is a value that is calculated by the following steps: putting the mold in a rotating cylindrical sieve that has a diameter of 177.8 mm and USA sieve size No. 8, rotating the cylindrical sieve at 57 rpm for 60 seconds, dividing the weight of the sand that has passed through the sieve by the weight of the sand that has been put into the sieve, and multiplying the quotient by 100.

Thermal Erosion Tester

US Patent:
20130243027, Sep 19, 2013
Filed:
Mar 15, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/837601
Inventors:
WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FOUNDATION - , US
Sam N. Ramrattan - Kalamazoo MI, US
International Classification:
G01N 25/00
US Classification:
374 7
Abstract:
A thermal erosion tester, comprising a rotating heated element, which is adapted to contact a sand specimen placed in the thermal erosion tester, a heating element to heat the rotating heated element, and a motor to drive rotation of the rotating heated element, wherein the rotating heated element is adapted to contact the sand specimen while the rotating heated element is rotating, causing erosion of the sand specimen, and a method of testing thermal erosion, and a method of testing erosion of a sand specimen when it is in contact with a heated element.

Biodegradable Starch Plastics Incorporating Modified Polyethylene

View page
US Patent:
51150000, May 19, 1992
Filed:
Jun 19, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/540583
Inventors:
Alan W. Schwabacher - Ames IA
Sam N. Ramrattan - Ames IA
Jeffrey A. Moore - Ames IA
Assignee:
Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc. - Ames IA
International Classification:
C08L 300
C08L 2300
C08F 800
US Classification:
524 47
Abstract:
A composition is disclosed for a biodegradable, blendable plastic having improved tensile strength. It consists of starch, oxidized polyethylene, and polyethylene. The starch is included in an amount up to 50% by weight, the oxidized polyethylene up to 15% by weight, and the remaining amount is polyethylene. It is preferred that high molecular weight oxidized polyethylene be used and in the method of producing the composition, it is preferred that the blending of the components occur at a temperature range of 110. degree. C. to 200. degree. C.

Filtering Check Valve For Metal Casting

View page
US Patent:
20160067773, Mar 10, 2016
Filed:
Nov 12, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/939530
Inventors:
- Wilmington DE, US
Ronald C. AUFDERHEIDE - London OH, US
Sam Nerone RAMRATTAN - Kalamazoo MI, US
Sean B. HARMON - Columbus OH, US
International Classification:
B22D 17/32
F16K 27/02
B22D 17/02
F16K 15/02
Abstract:
A sleeve () allows flow against gravity of molten metal into a casting mold. The sleeve has a sleeve body () with a longitudinal axis that defines a flow conduit for the metal. A check valve () is positioned in the flow conduit, arranged for limited axial movement in the sleeve between a closed position and an open position, although it is operatively positioned to be in the closed position in the absence of the pressurized metal. The check valve has a spool () with an internal flow conduit, a top end of the conduit blocked by an end cap (). Flanges () on the spool provide the limited axial movement in the sleeve. When lifted into the open position, metal flows into the spool flow conduit and through a porous structure of the spool, causing laminar flow and filtering inclusions.

View page
US Patent:
20150321246, Nov 12, 2015
Filed:
Dec 12, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/652026
Inventors:
- Kalamazoo MI, US
Sam N. Ramrattan - Kalamazoo MI, US
Margaret K. Joyce - Kalamazoo MI, US
Pavel Ikonomov - Portage MI, US
Assignee:
Western Michigan University Research Foundation - Kalamazoo MI
International Classification:
B22C 9/02
B22C 19/00
B22C 1/22
B22C 9/12
Abstract:
A method of creating a sand mold for rapid casting, including the steps of determining a mold shape, providing a generally uniform thickness layer of sand, curing at least a portion of the layer of sand, machining the cured portions of the layer of sand based on the desired mold shape, and repeating the layer-forming, curing and machining steps until the sand mold is complete. Another aspect includes a machine for creating the sand mold having a build envelope defined by side walls, a movable build platform and at least one movable tool assembly, the movable tool assembly having a single or plurality of tools chosen from the group consisting of a sand dispenser, a sand leveling device, a curing device, and a machining device.
