An electrosurgical instrument for sealing tissue includes one or more elongated shafts having an end effector assembly attached at a distal end thereof that includes a pair of opposing jaw members movable by an actuator from a first spaced apart position to a second position for grasping tissue. One or both jaw members are adapted to connect to an electrical energy source such that electrosurgical energy can be supplied to tissue disposed therebetween. A controller is coupled to the actuator for regulating a closing pressure between the jaw members and a sensor is configured to provide feedback to the controller regarding a seal pressure of tissue disposed between the jaw members.

Inventors:
Ryan Artale - Boulder CO, US
Philip Tetzlaff - Lafayette CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
US Classification:
606051000
Abstract:
A bipolar electrosurgical instrument has inner and outer members each having a respective jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof. Each jaw members has right and left side surfaces and seal surface. The seal surfaces are adapted to connect to an electrical energy source such that the seal surfaces are capable of conducting bipolar energy therebetween. The inner and outer members are movable from a first position where the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position where the jaw members are closer to one another for grasping tissue. The instrument further has a first gripping device disposed on at least one of the right and left side surfaces of one of the jaw members. The first gripping device includes tines extending therefrom dimensioned to engage and hold tissue when the jaw members are moved from the first position to the second position.

System And Method For Disabling Handswitching On An Electrosurgical Instrument

View page
US Patent:
20080033428, Feb 7, 2008
Filed:
Aug 4, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/499590
Inventors:
Ryan Artale - Boulder CO, US
Dylan Hushka - Boulder CO, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/14
US Classification:
606 51
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides for an electrosurgical forceps for treating tissue. The forceps comprises at least one handle having at least one shaft member attached thereto. The at least one shaft member has an end effector attached at a distal end thereof. The end effector includes a pair of jaw members being movable from a first position in spaced relation relative to one another to at least one subsequent position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. Each of the jaw members includes an electrically conductive sealing plate for communicating electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween to treat the tissue, the electrically conductive sealing plates adapted to connect to an electrosurgical generator. The forceps also include a handswitch coupled to at least one of the at least one handle and the at least one shaft member. The handswitch is adapted to connect to the electrosurgical generator and is selectively actuatable to initiate electrosurgical activation of the forceps. The forceps further include a lockout switch coupled to at least one of the at least one handle and the at least one shaft member. The lockout switch is movable from a first configuration wherein the lockout switch allows actuation of the handswitch to a second configuration wherein the lockout switch prevents actuation of the handswitch.

Tissue Fusion Device
