Gilbert I. Simon - Bronxville NY
Roy T. Witkin - Westport CT
International Classification:
A61L 218
US Classification:
422 37
Abstract:
Dental and medical instruments and appliances are chemically sterilized by immersion in or subjection to a formulation or composition comprising as active antimicrobial agents a combination or admixture of an iodophor such as the povidone-iodine complex or a quaternary ammonium compound such as cetyl pyridinium chloride and a peroxide such as H. sub. 2 O. sub. 2, the antimicrobial action of the iodine derived from the iodophor being enhanced or potentiated by oxygen released from the peroxide. The invention is applicable also to the chemical sterilization of surgical sites. Procedure for making and using the sterilizing formulation or composition is described.

A61K 3318
A61K 3179
US Classification:
222 94
Abstract:
Dentifrices comprising two components each of which comprises ingredients usually present in toothpastes or toothpowders, one component containing an iodophor as a source of derived iodine and the other component containing a source of active or nascent oxygen. The two components are kept out of contact with one another and separately filled into a suitable package so arranged and constructed that the components can be admixed and dispensed together to form an antimicrobial, antiplaque non-toxic dentifrice ready for use.

Presurgical Sterilization Method

View page
US Patent:
47388404, Apr 19, 1988
Filed:
Aug 29, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/902430
Inventors:
Gilbert I. Simon - Bronxville NY
Roy T. Witkin - Westport CT
International Classification:
A01N 5912
A61K 720
A61K 3318
A61K 3340
US Classification:
424 51
Abstract:
Pre- and post-operative dental and surgical procedures in and on structures and areas of the oral cavity are maintained sterile by the application thereto of an antimicrobially enhanced aqueous solution of an iodophor constituting a source of iodine and a peroxide as a source of oxygen, the aqueous solution ensuring sterility of the structures and areas in the oral cavity before, during and after the operating procedures therein and retarding or inhibiting microbial regrowth on and in the structures and areas in a dental or surgical environment. The iodophor is preferably a povidone iodine complex soluble in water and the peroxide is preferably hydrogen peroxide, the oxygen from the peroxide acting to enhance the antimicrobial activity of the iodine derived from the povidone iodine complex.
