Abstract:
A bridge and pier structure are disclosed for extending over a waterway, wherein the pier structure includes a chamber filled with air or other buoyant material such that a buoyancy force is produced. The chamber is sized and filled such that the buoyancy force offsets at least eighty or ninety percent of the weight of the bridge that is supported by the pier. The pier structure includes a footing portion that is embedded into the bed of the waterway, and an optional piling extends downwardly from the footing to engage more stable strata. In an embodiment of the invention, the pier includes a relatively large upper portion that defines the buoyant chambers, and a relatively narrow portion that extends down to the footing portion of the pier. In an embodiment, a bumper assembly is disposed about the pier, to protect the pier and provide a platform for other activities.

Abstract:
A bridge pier structure is disclosed having a downwardly open footing chamber, an upper buoyant chamber, an upright member that mechanically connects these chambers, and that defines a fluid channel to the footing chamber. A valve is disposed in an upper portion of the fluid channel and configured to attach to a water ejection pump and a vacuum source. The pressure in the footing chamber can be reduced, such that hydrostatic pressure and the atmospheric pressure aids in embedding the footing. Optionally, a vibrating apparatus attaches to the structure to facilitate embedding. The apparatus may also enable the structure to be dislodged after installation, by providing a high pressure air source to the valve. The structure may be installed by towing it to location, positioning it on the waterway bed, and applying a suction to the valve.

Abstract:
A drawbridge apparatus for reversibly spanning from a first pier to a second pier. The apparatus comprises first and second cantilevered beams, rack and pinion beam drive mechanisms, first and second bascular leaves, first and second hinged leaves, and rack and pinion leaf drive mechanisms. The first and second cantilevered beams are slidably coupled to the first and second piers, respectively. The beams are arranged and configured to project from the first and second bases to a location between the two where the beams make a locking interconnection when the bridge is in its down configuration. The beam drive mechanisms cause the first and second cantilevered beams to slide from and into the first and second bases, respectively. The first and second bascular leaves have first and second counterweight portions and first and second span portions, respectively. The bascular leaves are pivotally coupled to the bases at the intersections of the counterweight portions with the span portions.

Abstract:
A foldable cover of simple structure and light weight is provided. The cover consists of multiple cover sections which are connected by hinges so that they may be folded together. Each of the cover sections has a hole in its surface through which a cable extends, such that when the cable is pulled, the cover sections are folded together at one side of the opening. The cable is initially pulled from a height above the cover sections so that the first pair of cover sections are caused to buckle upwards and then fold together. Further pulling on the cable causes the remaining pairs of cover sections to buckle and fold one pair at a time. When the cover is being extended, a tension is maintained on the pulling cable so as to control the falling speed of the cover sections as they unfold. Hinges and wheels that are used on the cover and around the holes exhibit a low rotational friction, so that the cover may be opened and closed easily. A hand truck with a winch is used to pull the retracting cable so that the cover is folded on to the hand truck, whereby the cover can easily be moved to different locations.
