As a fellow in training in Pediatric Cardiology in the late 60s I became the first pediatric cardiologist in the U. S. to become interested in echocardiograpy. By the time I finished my fellowship, I had developed a world-wide reputation and received many offers from many prestigious University Centers to relocate and help them establish echo programs. I chose to remain in my birth state. To help improve the care of the children and adults with congenital heart disease in Kentucky. When my mentor Dr. Minhas died in 1977, Dr. Elbl and I were the only two pediatric cardiologists in Louisville to cover western KY. Each year he went to Argentina for a month to visit his family. During that month I worked from 7:00 am to 11:00pm 7 days a week for the month. I never considered it work, because I loved being with the children and familes that I had the good fortune to come to know. And I was very blessed to have a wife and four children who supported me in what became my calling.
