This invention is based upon the discovery that cyclized polyisoprene polymers can be incorporated into tire tread compounds to improve traction, treadwear, and resistance to tear. It is further based upon the discovery that cyclized polyisoprene polymers can be blended with halobutyl rubber and/or natural rubber and can be utilized in tire innerliner formulations. The present invention more specifically discloses a tire which is comprised of a generally toroidal-shaped carcass with an outer circumferential tread, two spaced beads, at least one ply extending from bead to bead and sidewalls extending radially from and connecting said tread to said beads, wherein said tread is adapted to be ground-contacting, and wherein said tread is comprised of a sulfur cured rubber composition which is comprised of about 5 phr to about 50 phr of cyclized polyisoprene and about 50 phr to about 95 phr of at least one other rubbery polymer. The present invention further discloses a tire which is comprised of a generally toroidal-shaped carcass with an outer circumferential tread, two spaced beads, an innerliner, at least one ply extending from bead to bead and sidewalls extending radially from and connecting said tread to said beads, wherein said innerliner is comprised of a sulfur cured rubber composition which is comprised of about 5 phr to about 50 phr of cyclized polyisoprene and about 50 phr to about 95 phr of at least one other rubbery polymer selected from the group consisting of natural rubber and halobutyl rubber.

It is often desirable to increase the modulus of rubbers utilized in a wide variety of applications. This invention discloses a technique for modifying rubbers to improve their modulus without sacrificing other properties. By utilizing the process of this invention, rubber compositions having increased modulus are prepared by grafting polyester onto rubber. This can be accomplished by reacting a polydiene rubber with a thioacid or maleic anhydride and subsequently with the polyester. It is also possible to prepare such polyester modified rubber compositions by reacting an epoxidized rubber with the polyester.

The present invention relates to an elastomeric composition comprising a blend of from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of polychloroprene and from about 75 to about 25 percent by weight of epoxidized natural rubber having a level of epoxide modification in the range of from about 15 to 85 mole percent. A continuous method for the in-situ polymerization of plastic in an elastomeric material in a form suitable for reinforcing the elastomeric material is provided. The method comprises feeding elastomer and a monomer or monomer precursor of a reinforcing material into a mixing device, mixing the elastomer and the monomer or monomer precursor vigorously, initiating polymerization, and causing the monomers to continue to polymerize until the polymer solidifies when the melting point of the polymer produced exceeds the mixing temperature of the elastomer, terminating polymerization.

The present invention relates to a process for improving the modulus of a rubber without sacrificing other properties. By utilizing the process of this invention, rubber compositions having increased modulus are prepared by the formation of polypropylene fibrils randomly dispersed throughout the rubber matrix. The present invention includes (1) forming a blend of (a) a polymer alloy containing polypropylene and (b) an unvulcanized rubber stock wherein said polypropylene is present in said blend in an amount ranging from about 5 phr to about 25 phr; and (2) vulcanizing the rubber stock in said blend after orienting said polypropylene by the application of heat and flowing said blend within a mold cavity.
