Methods And Apparatus For Using A Controllable Physical Light Filter As Part Of An Image Capture System And For Processing Captured Images

View page
US Patent:
20210223664, Jul 22, 2021
Filed:
Jan 19, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/746872
Inventors:
- Redwood City CA, US
Pablo A. Anigstein - Palo Alto CA, US
Rajiv Laroia - Far Hills NJ, US
International Classification:
G03B 11/00
G06T 7/20
G06T 1/20
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for using a controllable filter, e.g., an liquid crystal panel, in front of a camera are described. The filter is controlled based on the luminosity of object in a scene being captured by the camera to reduce or eliminate luminosity related image defects such as flaring, blooming or ghosting. Multiple cameras and filters can be used to capture multiple images as part of a depth determination processes where pixel values captured by cameras at different locations are matched to determine the depth, e.g., distance from the camera or camera system to object in the environment. Pixel values are normalized in some embodiments based on the amount of filtering applied to a sensor region and sensor exposure time. The filtering allows for regional sensor exposure control at an individual camera even though the overall exposure time of the pixel sensors maybe and often will be the same.

Methods And Apparatus For Capturing And Using Images In A System Including Wipers

View page
US Patent:
20210061228, Mar 4, 2021
Filed:
Dec 11, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/711363
Inventors:
- Redwood City CA, US
Pablo A. Anigstein - Palo Alto CA, US
Rajiv Laroia - Far Hills NJ, US
International Classification:
B60S 1/08
B60R 11/04
G06K 9/00
G02B 27/00
Abstract:
A wiper is controlled to sweep a surface area, e.g., a portion of a windshield, in front of a camera, e.g., a camera mounted inside a vehicle. An image captured from the camera after the wiper completes, e.g., immediately completes, the sweep of the surface area in front of the camera is used in generating a depth map. In some embodiments a first wiper is controlled to clear a surface area in front of a first camera while a second wiper is controlled to clear a surface area in front of second camera at the same time, and the first and second cameras are synchronized to initiate image capture at the same time, capturing images through recently cleared area, and the captured images are used to generate a depth map. A vehicle control operation, e.g., a direction, braking or speed control operation is performed based on the depth map.

Camera Calibration Apparatus And Methods

View page
US Patent:
20170280135, Sep 28, 2017
Filed:
Jun 24, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/192300
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Weiguang Si - Fremont CA, US
Nagilla Dikpal Reddy - Palo Alto CA, US
John Sasinowski - San Jose CA, US
Nghi Phan - San Jose CA, US
Jiamin Bai - Menlo Park CA, US
Harpuneet Singh - Dublin CA, US
Rajiv Laroia - Far Hills NJ, US
International Classification:
H04N 17/00
H04N 5/225
G06T 7/00
Abstract:
An exemplary camera calibration apparatus includes a movable, e.g., rotatable, support structure which is controllably positioned to allow for image capture of different test patterns and image capture of the same pattern at different distances by a mounted camera. A first test pattern is mounted on a wall, e.g., a pyramid shaped 4 sided wall formed by panels surrounding the camera under calibration. The movable support structure has a first mirror attached to a first side and has a second test pattern attached to a second side. A second mirror mounted on an internal sidewall of the calibration apparatus housing facilities a different image path distance between the camera capturing the image of the first test pattern and the first test pattern. The exemplary camera calibration apparatus is well suited for efficiently calibrating camera devices including a plurality of camera modules, e.g., optical chains, in a relatively small area.

Methods And Apparatus For Generating A Sharp Image

View page
US Patent:
20160309141, Oct 20, 2016
Filed:
Apr 17, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/689689
Inventors:
- Palo Alto CA, US
Nitesh Shroff - Palo Alto CA, US
Sapna A. Shroff - Sunnyvale CA, US
Rajiv Laroia - Far Hills NJ, US
International Classification:
H04N 13/02
G06T 5/00
H04N 5/225
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for generating a sharp image are described. A camera device includes a plurality of camera modules, e.g., optical chains, where at least some of the camera modules have different depths of field. Multiple images of a scene are captured using the plurality of camera modules. Portions of the multiple images which correspond to the same scene area are identified. Image portion sharpness levels are determined for individual image portions. Image portions with high sharpness levels are selected and included in a composite image.
