Inventors:
Ferenc M. Bozso - Ridgefeild CT, US
Phillip G. Emma - Danbury CT, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H01S 3/00
US Classification:
372 3802, 372 381, 372 3807, 372 4301
Abstract:
A high speed optical channel including an optical driver and a photodetector in a CMOS photoreceiver. The optical channel driver includes a FET driver circuit driving a passive element (e. g. , an integrated loop inductor) and a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) diode. The VCSEL diode is biased by a bias supply. The integrated loop inductor may be integrated in CMOS technology and on the same IC chip as either/both of the FET driver and the VCSEL diode. The photodetector is in a semiconductor (silicon) layer that may be on an insulator layer, i. e. , SOI. One or more ultrathin metal electrodes (

US Patent:
20040208453, Oct 21, 2004
Filed:
Oct 16, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/272694
Inventors:
Lawrence Jacobowitz - Wappingers Falls NY, US
Christoph Berger - Horgen, CH
Cameron Brooks - Elmsford NY, US
Casimer DeCusatis - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Phillip Emma - Danbury CT, US
John Knickerbocker - Wappingers Falls NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G02B006/26
US Classification:
385/050000, 385/014000, 398/164000
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for forming a staircase arrangement for the connection of optical waveguides between a card and backplane. A card having optical waveguides and electrical conductors embedded in the card has an edge ending in a staircase arrangement with optical fiber-ribbons protruding from the edge. A guidance structure is connected to the edge and contains channels to guide and align the optical fiber-ribbons. A backplane having embedded optical waveguides and electrical conductors also has an edge ending in a staircase arrangement with a guidance structure connected to the edge and tapered openings which receive and guide the optical fiber-ribbons into close proximity with the optical waveguides and forming a staircase arrangement of connected waveguides between a card and backplane.

US Patent:
20080010555, Jan 10, 2008
Filed:
Jun 16, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/424696
Inventors:
Phillip Emma - Danbury CT, US
Alian Hartstein - Chappaqua NY, US
Daniel N. Lynch - Austin TX, US
Thomas R. Puzak - Rigefield CT, US
Vijayalakshmi Srinivasan - New York NY, US
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 47
Abstract:
A hardware monitor is used to monitor the sequence of instructions executed during a miss cluster. The monitor groups each cache miss into a miss cluster, and the miss penalty associated with each cluster is determined by identifying a set of instructions that were executed during the miss cluster. The finite cache running time is then calculated for the set of instructions that occurred during the miss cluster. Additionally, an infinite cache running time is determined for the same set of instructions that occurred during the miss cluster, where the infinite cache running time is the time needed to execute this set of instructions in the absence of any miss. The cost of the miss cluster is then calculated by measuring the difference between the finite cache running time and the infinite cache running time.
