Fault Current Detection Method

View page
US Patent:
6456097, Sep 24, 2002
Filed:
Dec 29, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/474821
Inventors:
Peter E. Sutherland - Voorheesville NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
G01R 2708
US Classification:
324713, 324520, 324715, 324107, 324110, 324108
Abstract:
A method for measuring the impedance of electrical distribution equipment includes: applying a voltage at a first selected frequency to electrical distribution equipment, waiting a delay time for transient effects to settle, measuring current through the electrical distribution equipment, and selecting additional frequencies to repeat the steps of applying, waiting, and measuring. The method can be implemented, for example, by a meter which includes: a control processor connected to receive and execute instructions, and to output a control signal; a frequency generator for generating a frequency signal having a frequency determined by the control signal; a power amplifier connected to receive the control signal and the frequency signal, the power amplifier outputting a voltage signal to the electrical distribution system through a voltage transformer; and an analog-to-digital converter connected to receive analog feedback voltage signals from the voltage transformer, the analog-to-digital converter outputting a digital feedback voltage signal to the processor.

Switchgear And Relaying Configuration

US Patent:
20040036461, Feb 26, 2004
Filed:
Aug 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/225955
Inventors:
Peter Sutherland - Voorheesville NY, US
International Classification:
H01F017/00
US Classification:
323/355000
Abstract:
A method for operating an electrical apparatus includes mounting an instrument transformer proximate a load current carrying conductor, wherein the instrument transformer includes a current transformer for supplying an analog input signal proportional to a load current, the current transformer is coupled to a relay front-end module that includes a current-to-voltage converter circuit and is configured to couple to a remote protection module, converting the analog input signal to a digital input signal, transmitting the digital input signal to the remote protection module; and activating contacts to operate the electrical apparatus based on the digital input signals.

Arc Flash Hazard Reduction For Transformer Secondaries

View page
US Patent:
20110255199, Oct 20, 2011
Filed:
Apr 16, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/761587
Inventors:
Peter Edward Sutherland - Voorheesville NY, US
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
H02H 7/04
US Classification:
361 38
Abstract:
Arc flash hazard reduction for transformer secondaries is provided. A current-limiting protection device such as a current-limiting fuse is located between the secondary windings of a transformer and switchgear having a main circuit breaker. Placing the current-limiting fuse between the secondary windings of the transformer and switchgear reduces arc flash hazard levels between the transformer and the switchgear.

Method And Apparatus For Use In Monitoring Operation Of Electrical Switchgear

View page
US Patent:
20120026630, Feb 2, 2012
Filed:
Jul 30, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/847383
Inventors:
Peter E. Sutherland - Voorheesville NY, US
International Classification:
H02H 7/04
H01F 41/00
H02M 11/00
US Classification:
361 35, 327103, 296021
Abstract:
An instrument transformer includes a current transformer configured to be coupled to a load, and to generate an analog signal that is proportional to a current flowing through the load. The instrument transformer also includes a protection module and a digitizer module that is coupled to the current transformer. The digitizer module is configured to receive an input signal that is proportional to the analog signal and to convert the input signal to a digital signal. The digitizer module includes a synchronization module for generating at least one timing signal and a fiber optic interface module coupled to the protection module and to the synchronization module for transmitting the digital signal to the protection module.

Superconducting Cable System

US Patent:
20120103659, May 3, 2012
Filed:
Oct 28, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/914139
Inventors:
Peter Edward Sutherland - Voorheesville NY, US
Assignee:
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
H01B 12/02
US Classification:
1741251, 505230
Abstract:
In an embodiment, an apparatus including a cable is disclosed. The cable includes at least two conductors, each conductor comprising a high-temperature superconductor material, wherein a first conductor is concentric within a second conductor, and wherein the first conductor is tapered at a first end of the cable and the second conductor is tapered at a second end of the cable.
