Adaptive Frequency Touchscreen Controller Employing Digital Signal Processing

View page
US Patent:
6473075, Oct 29, 2002
Filed:
Sep 29, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/408591
Inventors:
Paulo Irulegui Gomes - Fremont CA
Shigeki Kambara - Himeji, JP
Hiroshi Kaneda - Himeji, JP
Joel Kent - Fremont CA
Arie Ravid - Newark CA
Assignee:
Elo Touchsystems, Inc. - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G09G 500
US Classification:
345177, 345173, 178 1804
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adapting an acoustic touchscreen controller to the operating frequency requirements of a specific touchscreen are provided. The adaptive controller can either utilize look-up tables to achieve the desired output frequency or the it can use a multi-step process in which it first determines the frequency requirements of the touchscreen, and then adjusts the burst frequency characteristics, the receiver circuit center frequency, or both in accordance with the touchscreen requirements. In one embodiment, the adaptive controller compensates for global frequency mismatch errors. In this embodiment a digital multiplier is used to modify the output of a crystal reference oscillator. The reference oscillator output is used to control the frequency of the signal from the receiving transducers and/or to generate the desired frequency of the tone burst sent to the transmitting transducers. In another embodiment that is intended to compensate for both global and local frequency variations, the adaptive controller uses a digital signal processor.

Acoustic Touchscreen Having Waveguided Reflector Arrays

View page
US Patent:
6636201, Oct 21, 2003
Filed:
May 26, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/579584
Inventors:
Paulo Irulegui Gomes - Redwood City CA
Joel Kent - Fremont CA
James L. Aroyan - Soquel CA
Shigeki Kambara - Hyogo, JP
Assignee:
ELO TouchSystems, Inc. - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G09G 500
US Classification:
345173, 178 1804
Abstract:
An acoustic touchscreen ( ) has transmitting transducers ( ) for generating acoustic signals which are deflected across a touch-sensitive area ( ) by an array of partially acoustically reflective elements. A touch on the touch-sensitive area causes a perturbation in the acoustic signals. After traversing the touch-sensitive area, the acoustic signals are redirected by another array of partially acoustically reflective elements , towards receiving transducers ( ), where the signals (and any perturbations) are sensed. To accommodate touchscreens having narrow border regions ( ), the acoustic signals are propagated across the border regions using acoustic waveguides ( ). The waveguide confines the acoustic signals to traveling along a narrow path width, but yet permit them to be deflected across the touch-sensitive area. In this manner, the transducers and reflective elements can in turn be of narrower construction and can fit within narrow border regions.

US Patent:
7545365, Jun 9, 2009
Filed:
Apr 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/106166
Inventors:
Joel C. Kent - Fremont CA, US
Paulo I. Gomes - Redwood City CA, US
Assignee:
Tyco Electronics Corporation - Middletown PA
International Classification:
G09G 5/00
US Classification:
345173
Abstract:
A touch sensor comprises a substrate capable of propagating acoustic waves. The substrate includes a first surface having a touch sensitive region and a first sidewall intersecting the first surface at a first edge. A transmitter is provided on the first sidewall of the substrate. The transmitter generates acoustic waves that propagate directly from the first sidewall through at least a portion of the touch sensitive region.

Inventors:
Joel C. Kent - Fremont CA, US
Paulo I. Gomes - Redwood City CA, US
Robert Adler - Northbrook IL, US
Assignee:
Elo Touch Solutions, Inc. - Menlo Park CA
International Classification:
G09G 5/00
US Classification:
345177
Abstract:
A touch sensor comprises a substrate capable of propagating acoustic waves and includes a first surface having a touch sensitive region. A first sidewall intersects the first surface along a first edge. The first edge is configured to propagate a first acoustic wave along the first edge. The first acoustic wave may be a one-dimensional edge wave. A wave converter converts the first acoustic wave to a second acoustic wave, and the first surface is configured to propagate the second acoustic wave across the touch sensitive region.

Method Of Manufacturing Touch Sensor With Switch Tape Strips

US Patent:
20050110767, May 26, 2005
Filed:
Nov 24, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/720438
Inventors:
Paulo Gomes - Redwood City CA, US
Erling Hansen - Redwood City CA, US
Ryo Tamaki - Clifton Park NY, US
Mark Ellsworth - Dublin CA, US
Richard Lloyd - Sunnyvale CA, US
Assignee:
Elo TouchSystems, Inc. - Fremont CA
International Classification:
G09G005/00
B32B007/12
B32B015/04
US Classification:
345173000, 428343000
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to touch sensors with arrays of switches (e.g., diodes or transistors) that can be used to selectively apply voltage gradients across a resistive touch regions of the touch sensor substrate. Touches on the touch sensor can then be sensed by measuring the voltage at the touch location on the resistive touch region. The switch arrays take the form of strips of switches that can be cut from a prefabricated reel or a sheet and applied to the touchscreen substrate.

Appl. No.:
8/610260
Inventors:
Marcia M. Davis-Cannon - Mountain View CA
Robert De Renzi - Pleasanton CA
Paulo Irulegui Gomes - Santa Cruz CA
Joel Christopher Kent - Fremont CA

Abstract:
An acoustic wave touch sensor comprising an acoustic wave transducer, for transducing an acoustic wave; a substrate, having a front surface. A surface bound acoustic wave interface, having at one least bevel edge, is provided, having an transmitted acoustic wave signal attenuation of less than about 3 dB. The acoustic wave transducer is mounted to transmit the acoustic wave through the interface into the substrate, so that the energy of the acoustic wave appears at the surface. The acoustic wave transducer is mounted on a beveled region of the substrate, inclined to the front surface. The beveled edge has an effective radius which is small as compared to the wavelength and a bevel angle such that the acoustic wave is attenuated by less than about 3 dB on transmission across the edge. In this manner, means are provided to recess transducers for improved product robustness and compactness of design.
