Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a curable, water-based coating composition utilized in waterborne coating systems. The coating composition is the reaction product of a water-based copolymer prepared by free-radical polymerization, and a cross-linking agent. The copolymer is the reaction product of a first block and a second block. The first block is the reaction product of a first ethylenically unsaturated monomer, acrylic acid, and a second ethylenically unsaturated monomer, methyl methacrylate, as wells as the reaction product of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon monomer, diphenylethylene. The second block is the reaction product of a plurality of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, styrene, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, and carbonate-modified glycidyl methacrylate including a carbonate functional group. The cross-linking agent, triaminononane, includes amino functional groups that react with the carbonate functional group to establish a coating composition having of carbonateâamine cross-linking. Methods for preparing the coating composition and a cured film are also disclosed.

The second block is the reaction product of a plurality of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, styrene, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, and carbonate-modified glycidyl methacrylate including a carbonate functional group that is subsequently converted into a carbamate functional group by ammonium hydroxide. The cross-linking agent, preferably a melamine, reacts with the carbamate functional group to establish a coating composition having urethane cross-linking from the carbamateâmelamine reaction.

Aug 9, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/216351
Inventors:
Swaminathan Ramesh - Canton MI
Paul Lessek - Milford MI
Paul J. Harris - West Bloomfield MI
Assignee:
BASF Corporation - Southfield MI
International Classification:
C08L 8304
US Classification:
525474, 525540, 528254, 528 27, 528 28, 560225, 10628711
Abstract:
The present invention provides a crosslinker for organic coatings having an amino resin core with substituents including more than one olefin functional group, a silicon-containing group, and at least one alkoxyalkyl or alkylol group. Coating compositions containing the crosslinker can be cured with radiation, especially ultraviolet radiation. The crosslinker can be included in a coating composition with one or more curable resins, applied onto a substrate and cured to form the cured coating of the invention.
