US Patent:
6991727, Jan 31, 2006
Filed:
Feb 16, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/059064
Inventors:
David C. Bomberger - Belmont CA, US
Pablo E. Garcia - Redwood City CA, US
Eric Hegwer - Menlo Park CA, US
Thomas P. Low - Belmont CA, US
Ripudaman Malhotra - San Carlos CA, US
Assignee:
Lipid Sciences, Inc. - Pleasanton CA
International Classification:
B01D 11/04
A61M 37/00
US Classification:
21032178, 21032179, 210634, 210645, 210649, 210790, 604 503, 422256
Abstract:
This invention is directed to systems and methods for removing lipids from a fluid, such as plasma, or from lipid-containing organisms. These systems contact a fluid with an extraction solvent, which causes the lipids in the fluid to separate from the fluid or causes lipids in the lipid-containing organisms to separate from the lipid-containing organism, using at least one hollow fiber contactor. The separated lipids are removed from the fluid. The extraction solvent is removed from the fluid or at least reduced to a level below a particular threshold enabling the fluid to be administered to a patient without the patient experiencing undesirable consequences. Once the fluid has been processed, the fluid may be administered to a patient who donated the fluid, to a different patient, or be stored.

B67D 5/08
US Classification:
436180, 422100, 222 57, 222639
Abstract:
An apparatus and device for dispensing femtoliter to nanoliter volumes of liquid samples are disclosed. The apparatus includes a liquid-support plate, two electrodes, a substrate, and a control unit. The liquid support plate has a plurality of liquid-support regions, each capable of supporting a liquid meniscus thereon. The first electrode contains a plurality of electrode connections, each operatively connected to one of the liquid support regions, for electrical contact with a meniscus supported in such region. The substrate has a first side confronting the plate and an opposite side, and a plurality of sample-holding regions formed in the first side. The second electrode is disposed adjacent one of the two substrate sides. Thus, a selected volume of the liquid can be ejected from or to one or more of the liquid-support regions to or from one or more of the sample-holding regions.

Abstract:
This invention is directed to systems and methods for removing lipids from a fluid or from lipid-containing organisms from a fluid, such as plasma. These systems combine a fluid with at least one extraction solvent, which causes the lipids to separate from the fluid or from the lipid-containing organisms. The separated lipids are removed from the fluid. The at least one extraction solvent is removed from the fluid or at least reduced to a concentration enabling the fluid to be administered to a patient without undesirable consequences. Once the fluid has been processed, the fluid may be administered to a patient who donated the fluid or to a different patient for therapy.

System And Method Of Magnetically Sensing Position Of A Moving Component

View page
US Patent:
7259553, Aug 21, 2007
Filed:
Apr 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/104740
Inventors:
Pablo Garcia - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
SRI International - Menlo Park CA
International Classification:
G01B 7/30
US Classification:
32420725, 324213
Abstract:
A position-sensing system magnetically senses the position of a piston rod moving with respect to a cylinder. A magnetically hard layer on the piston rod provides a recording medium. Information is magnetically recorded in regions of the magnetically hard layer. These regions provide a relative encoding scheme for determining the position of the piston rod. Magnetic-field sensors are positioned over redundant tracks of magnetically recorded regions. Each magnetic-field sensor positioned over a given track senses the same magnetized regions while the piston rod moves with respect to the cylinder. Other magnetic-field sensors can sense ambient fields for use in performing common-mode rejection. A write head can dynamically repair damaged or erased regions detected by the magnetic-field sensors. Energized by a battery-backup power source, the magnetic-field sensors and associated circuitry can continue to track movement of the piston rod when the machinery is off.
