Active Ground Current Reduction Device

View page
US Patent:
6646837, Nov 11, 2003
Filed:
Nov 6, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/682994
Inventors:
Orrin B. West - Canton MI
Assignee:
Ballard Power Systems Corporation - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
H02H 300
US Classification:
361 42, 361 44, 361 45
Abstract:
A device inserted between a grounded poly-phase external voltage source and a load providing low insertion loss for differential mode currents and high insertion loss for ground currents. The device receives voltages from the grounded poly-phase external voltage source over atone or more voltage lines. The voltages contain common mode voltages. A filter connected to each of the voltage lines reduces the ground current from the load. A summing block adds the voltages from each of the voltage lines to generate a total common mode voltage. A ground referenced controlled voltage source generates a cancellation voltage equal to the total common mode voltage in response to the generation of total common mode voltage. The total common mode voltage is injected into the filter and substantially reduces the common mode voltage on each voltage line thereby substantially reducing the ground currents associated with each common mode voltage on each voltage line.

Method And System For Non-Invasive Power Transistor Die Voltage Measurement

View page
US Patent:
6861835, Mar 1, 2005
Filed:
Dec 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/309793
Inventors:
Douglas K. Maly - Jefferson MA, US
Orrin B. West - Canton MI, US
Chingchi Chen - Ann Arbor MI, US
Assignee:
Ballard Power Systems Corporation - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
G01R007/00
US Classification:
324140R, 3241581
Abstract:
A non-invasive, non-destructive method and system for determining power transistor peak die voltage utilizes values for each of a plurality of parameters determined by measurement of external terminal voltages for any number of switches, such as transistors of an inverter. Stray inductance values are calculated and used with measured current gradient to calculate the peak die voltages for the switches. A refinement of the method determines transistor peak die voltage without measuring current.

Inverter And A Method For Controlling An Electric Machine

View page
US Patent:
8432118, Apr 30, 2013
Filed:
May 2, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/098636
Inventors:
Stephen Lind - Fargo ND, US
Michael R. Schlichtmann - Fargo ND, US
Orrin B. West - Fargo ND, US
Kent D. Wanner - Fargo ND, US
Assignee:
Deere & Company - Moline IL
International Classification:
H02H 7/08
US Classification:
318476, 3182541, 318491, 318701, 318808
Abstract:
An inverter comprises output switches for generating motor phase currents for application to an electrical motor based on a commanded torque. A current sensor is arranged for detecting motor phase currents applied to the electrical motor by an inverter. A voltage sensor is configured for measuring voltages applied to the electrical motor by the inverter. An output port is capable of outputting output signals of the detected motor phase currents and measured voltages for processing by a vehicle controller. The output signals are suitable for input to a vehicle controller for determining whether or not to generate an override control signal. An input port is configured for receiving the override control signal from the vehicle controller. The input port is coupled to an override input module for switching off a supply of electrical energy to the electric motor.

System And Method For Charging Capacitors Of An Electric Vehicle

View page
US Patent:
20120277942, Nov 1, 2012
Filed:
Apr 28, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/096551
Inventors:
Eric Vilar - Dubuque IA, US
Brij N. Singh - West Fargo ND, US
Long Wu - Fargo ND, US
Zimin W. Vilar - Dubuque IA, US
Orrin B. West - Canton MI, US
Assignee:
DEERE & COMPANY - Moline IL
International Classification:
B60L 15/00
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
701 22, 320166
Abstract:
An electric vehicle is provided having an electric generator and a motor. A voltage bus including a DC link is configured to provide generated electrical energy to the motor. A controller may estimate the charging current to a capacitor of the voltage bus based on the current commanded from the generator and the voltage measured across the capacitor. The controller may adjust the charging rate of the capacitor based on the estimated charging current.
