B29C 69/00
B32B 5/20
B60R 19/03
US Classification:
264241, 425130, 425573, 264572, 264513, 4283188
Abstract:
A vehicle bumper () integrates rigid and flexible components into a single co-injection molded structure. In a preferred embodiment, a flexible fascia () is provided with integrated rigid fastener brackets (), energy absorption structure and head lamp brackets and housings (). A method for manufacturing such a bumper provides for the injection of two different plastic materials during the same molding process. The flexible plastic material first injected into the mold. Then, the rigid plastic material is injected at gates located where the rigid material is desired. In one embodiment, the rigid material is completely contained within the flexible material. The rigid material may be either a higher stiffness plastic or a fiber reinforced plastic.

Composite Liftgate System

US Patent:
8403399, Mar 26, 2013
Filed:
Jun 1, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/992163
Inventors:
Christopher J. Kuntze - Clarkston MI, US
Stephen R. Roddy - Harrison Township MI, US
Martin McLeod - Barrie, CA
Michelle Vanbuskirk - Rochester Hills MI, US
Alexander Kiselev - Rochester Hills MI, US
Gari M. Schalte - Oakland Township MI, US
Norman Guschewski - Rochester MI, US
Assignee:
Magna International Inc.
International Classification:
B60J 5/10
B60J 9/00
US Classification:
2961468, 2961466, 296205
Abstract:
The present invention is a thermoplastic composite liftgate system with reinforcements in key areas to allow the system to meet performance requirements, while lowering the tooling investment, lowering the system mass, and improving the styling flexibility. The present invention includes an inner panel and at least one bracket or reinforcement member connected to the inner panel such that when a force is applied to the bracket, the force is distributed to the inner panel.

Composite Lift Gate Deformable Section

US Patent:
8646829, Feb 11, 2014
Filed:
Dec 16, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/327867
Inventors:
Michael W. Crane - Rochester MI, US
Gari M. Schalte - Oakland Township MI, US
Thomas E. Cobb - Harrison Township MI, US
Norman E. Guschewski - Rochester MI, US
Assignee:
Magna International Inc. - Aurora
International Classification:
B60J 5/10
B62D 33/027
US Classification:
2961465, 29618703, 296 56, 2961468
Abstract:
A lift gate having a deformable section which allows the lift gate to deform rather than break during a low speed impact event. The lift gate has a deformable section located between an inner panel and an outer panel. The deformable section is able to deform during a low speed impact event against the outer panel, thereby preventing the inner panel from receiving any of the impact. This allows the inner panel to be significantly more rigid than the outer panel and the deformable section, and, therefore, provides the necessary structural support for the lift gate while withstanding collisions on the Impact Zone.
