Networking Device And Method For Making Cyclic Redundancy Check (Crc) Immune To Scrambler Error Duplication

View page
US Patent:
6609226, Aug 19, 2003
Filed:
Apr 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/545660
Inventors:
Norival R. Figueira - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H03M 1309
US Classification:
714807
Abstract:
A networking device and method for transparently modifying a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) of a message so that higher layers (e. g. , data link layer and above) can detect error duplication caused by scrambling and descrambling. No increase in the size of the messaging is needed so that the invention may be used for current and future technologies. In one embodiment, the networking device comprises logic employed within a physical layer of the device. This logic, referred to as a scrambler, modifies an original cyclic redundancy check (CRC) value associated with a message. This enables detection of a duplication of bit errors at a targeted destination of the message.

10 Gigabit Ethernet Mappings For A Common Lan/Wan Pmd Interface With A Simple Universal Physical Medium Dependent Interface

View page
US Patent:
6944163, Sep 13, 2005
Filed:
Dec 19, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/739385
Inventors:

Norival R. Figueira - San Jose CA, US
David W. Martin - Stittsville, CA
Timothy J. Armstrong - Stittsville, CA
Bijan Raahemi - Nepean, CA

International Classification:
H04L012/56
H04J003/22
US Classification:
3703955, 370466, 370477, 370521, 370545, 375248
Abstract:
An Ethernet mapping enables high speed Ethernet data streams having a data rate of 10 Gb/s to be transported across a synchronous packet switched network fabric having a standard SONET OC-192 line rate of 9. 953280 Gbaud. The 10 Gb/s Ethernet data stream is compressed by removing interframe gaps between successive MAC frames to produce a compressed data stream, which is then mapped to a synchronous container. The synchronous container is then launched across the synchronous packet switched network fabric at a standard SONET OC-192 line rate of 9. 953280 Gbaud. The synchronous container is preferably provided as a stripped STS-192c frame having only A1 and A2 octets of the Transport Overhead (TOH). The compressed data stream is mapped directly to the synchronous container, starting at the first octet following the A1 and A2 octets, without first being inserted into a conventional STS-192c SPE, so that most of the space normally used for TOH and Path overhead (POH) within a conventional STS-192c frame is freed-up for carrying the compressed data stream. At a receiving interface, the compressed data stream is extracted from received synchronous containers and decompressed, by insertion of interframe gaps between successive MAC frames, to generate a recovered 10 Gb/s Ethernet data stream.

Method And Apparatus For Implementing Scheduling Algorithms In A Network Element

View page
US Patent:
7394808, Jul 1, 2008
Filed:
May 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/852317
Inventors:
Norival Figueira - Campbell CA, US
Huiwen Li - San Jose CA, US
Guyves Achtari - Ottawa, CA
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
H04L 12/56
US Classification:
370389
Abstract:
Device-wide performance guarantees may be implemented in a network element using a pull forwarding scheme by using separate processes on the network element communicating via handshake signals to enable coordination between the aspects of the network element. One class of processes execute at the ingress queues, a second class of process execut at junction points, and a final class of processes execute at the egress ports. The combination of these separate processes leads to the correct scheduling of frames in a device-wide manner as if there were a centralized scheduler with complete information about all queued frames. As a result, the performance guarantees of the intended scheduling algorithm are preserved and are provided in a device-wide manner. The scheduling algorithms that are supported include round-robin, deficit round robin, negative deficit round robin, weighted round robin, and strict priority.

Implementing Fifos In Shared Memory Using Linked Lists And Interleaved Linked Lists

View page
US Patent:
7555579, Jun 30, 2009
Filed:
May 21, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/850886
Inventors:
Norival R. Figueira - Campbell CA, US
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent, Quebec
International Classification:
G06F 5/00
US Classification:
710 52, 711202
Abstract:
FIFOs may be implemented in shared memory using linked lists and interleaved linked lists such that any individual FIFO can dynamically use any free memory location. The system may be implemented in hardware efficiently and does not pre-allocate memory to any FIFO, so that the whole shared memory may be used by any one of the FIFOs. The maximum physical size of a FIFO is then limited only by the size of the physical memory and not by the number of FIFOs sharing the same physical memory or by any mechanism for pre-allocating physical memory to the FIFOs. The linked lists contain data words, each data word containing a data field and a reference to a subsequent free memory location. A subsequent data word may be enqueued to the FIFO at the last referenced free memory location. A dequeue operation returns free memory locations to the free memory pool. Multiple linked lists may be interleaved to accelerate reading of data words from the FIFO.

Method And Apparatus For Direct Frame Switching Using Frame Contained Destination Information

View page
US Patent:
7697527, Apr 13, 2010
Filed:
Nov 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/718129
Inventors:
Norival R. Figueira - Campbell CA, US
Paul A. Bottorff - Palo Alto CA, US
Huiwen Li - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent, Quebec
International Classification:
H04L 12/56
US Classification:
370392, 370389
Abstract:
Frame contained destination information may be used by a switch to identify an appropriate output port for a given frame without performing a table access operation. This reduces the processing requirements of the switch to enable the switch to handle frames more efficiently. The frame contained destination information may be contained in the frame's local destination MAC addresses (DA) such that a portion of the DA directly indicates, for each switch that handles the frame, an output port for that switch. Different portions of the DA may be used by different switches, depending on where they are in the network hierarchy. Large switches may also use sub-fields within their allocated portion in the DA to identify internal switching components. A location resolution server may be provided to store and distribute IP and MAC addresses and respond to local ARP requests on the local domain.

View page
US Patent:
7876749, Jan 25, 2011
Filed:
Nov 23, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/287583
Inventors:
Norival Figueira - Campbell CA, US
Paul Bottorff - Palo Alto CA, US
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - Mississauga, Ontario
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
US Classification:
370389, 370535
Abstract:
A metro area network is provided that includes edge and core multiplexors each having a plurality of line ports and one or more uplink ports, a transport network carrying multiplexed traffic between the edge and core multiplexors. In a hard cross connect implementation utilizing source port tagging, a cross-connect device coupled to the core multiplexors provisions or maps communications path between the core multiplexors thereby providing preselected connectivity/mapping of two or more line ports of any of the edge multiplexors.
