Managing Video Adaptation Algorithms

View page
US Patent:
8537699, Sep 17, 2013
Filed:
Apr 8, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/756495
Inventors:
Nikolai K. Leung - Takoma Park MD, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04L 1/00
H04N 11/04
G06F 15/16
US Classification:
370252, 370236, 37524028, 709231
Abstract:
Techniques are described for controlling the operation of a dynamic rate adaptation algorithm by modifying control parameters exposed by the dynamic rate adaptation algorithm. In one aspect, an apparatus comprises a rate adaptation module comprising a plurality of control parameters. The rate adaptation module monitors conditions of a network and adjusts a coding rate of a media encoder based on the network conditions and the plurality of control parameters. Each of the plurality of control parameters specifies a threshold value or a timing value that controls a response of the rate adaptation algorithm to the network conditions. The apparatus also comprises a client that receives a value for a first one of the plurality of control parameters and sets the first control parameter to the received value.

Apparatus And Method For Supporting Analog Fax Calls In A Tandem Configuration

View page
US Patent:
20010040702, Nov 15, 2001
Filed:
Jul 6, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/900250
Inventors:
Nikolai Leung - Arlington VA, US
International Classification:
H04N001/32
US Classification:
358/434000, 358/443000, 358/468000, 400/557000, 379/100150, 379/100170
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for supporting analog fax calls between two wireless subscriber stations in a tandem configuration are presented herein. To support the tandem configuration, full duplex communication may be established between the two base stations. Full duplex communication may be realized by incorporating an echo canceler in the base station, or by utilizing both BFSK channels of the V.21 fax system for communication. The tandem configuration may also be supported by advanced flag synchronization, wherein a second base station will immediately start sending preamble flags to a first base station after a message is transmitted from the first base station to the second base station. The first base station may then synchronize its receiver for immediate receipt of the return message from the second base station.

Method For Detecting Delayed Data Frames In A Transport Function

View page
US Patent:
20020041596, Apr 11, 2002
Filed:
Aug 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/943276
Inventors:
Ramin Rezaiifar - San Diego CA, US
Nikolai Leung - Arlington VA, US
International Classification:
H04L012/56
US Classification:
370/394000
Abstract:
A method for detecting delayed data frames in a transport function includes the steps of comparing a frame sequence counter with a predetermined threshold value, detecting a delayed frame if the sequence counter exceeds the threshold value, and processing the detected delayed frame accordingly. In an RLP data transport protocol, the delayed frame may be processed as a retransmitted frame. The threshold value may be proportional to the maximum number of frames sent in a given bundle times the maximum delay, in units of frame intervals, between frames sent simultaneously over the air in the same frame interval.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Protocol Options In A Wireless Communication System

View page
US Patent:
20020141365, Oct 3, 2002
Filed:
Oct 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/033141
Inventors:
Nikolai Leung - Takoma Park MD, US
International Classification:
H04B007/216
H04J003/18
US Classification:
370/335000, 370/477000
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for providing broadcast overhead information interleaved with a broadcast session in a transmission on a broadcast channel of a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, the information is stored at the receiver to provide quick updating when a user changes to an alternate broadcast channel. In one embodiment, the content server provides an identifier SDP_ID to distinguish among sets of protocol options description sets.

Method And Apparatus For Resolving Ambiguity In Reception Of Multiple Retransmitted Frames

View page
US Patent:
20020141414, Oct 3, 2002
Filed:
Apr 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/128212
Inventors:
Ramin Rezaiifar - San Diego CA, US
Nikolai Leung - Arlington VA, US
International Classification:
H04L012/28
US Classification:
370/394000, 370/473000
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for resolving ambiguity in reception of multiple retransmitted frames includes ascertaining for each data frame received from a transmitter whether the frame is a retransmitted frame. If the frame is a retransmitted frame, the frame may be stored in a resequencing buffer. If an abort timer associated with the second round of retransmission has been set for the retransmitted frame, an associated negative-acknowledgment-list (NAK-list) entry is not removed from a NAK list until the abort timer has expired. If the abort timer has not been set for the retransmitted frame, the associated NAK-list entry is removed from the NAK list. The method and apparatus may reside in a transport function in which a transmitter sends data frames to a receiver in accordance with the Radio Link Protocol interface. The transport function may reside in, e.g., a data-capable cellular or satellite-based base station and subscriber unit.

Method And Apparatus For Out-Of-Band Transmission Of Broadcast Service Option In A Wireless Communication System

View page
US Patent:
20020141447, Oct 3, 2002
Filed:
Aug 20, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/934021
Inventors:
Nikolai Leung - Takoma Park MD, US
Raymond Hsu - San Diego CA, US
International Classification:
H04J003/22
US Classification:
370/469000, 370/477000, 370/522000
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for providing an overhead information for a broadcast service in a wireless communication system via an out-of-band transmission. The mobile station is able to contact the content server directly using the out-of-band-signaling over a packet data service option. The out-of-band communication allows the content server to update the information without transmitting via an intermediate infrastructure element. In one embodiment, the overhead information includes a service option number corresponding to a set of broadcast parameters, such as those identifying a protocol stack for processing broadcast content.

Internet Protocol Framing Using Radio Link Protocol

View page
US Patent:
20030002467, Jan 2, 2003
Filed:
Jun 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/895655
Inventors:
Nikolai Leung - Takoma Park MD, US
International Classification:
H04Q007/24
US Classification:
370/338000, 370/474000, 370/476000
Abstract:
Techniques for supporting IP framing with lower computational load are disclosed herein. In one aspect, IP packets are partitioned into RLP frames. Subsequently, the IP packets, partitioned into RLP frames, are transmitted on a wireless data link employing RLP. In another aspect, received RLP frames are reconstructed into IP packets. The RLP framing is used to supply frame boundaries for the reconstructed IP packets. These aspects have the benefit of using the underlying frame transmission and framing properties of RLP, thus minimizing computational load associated with framing, transmitting, and receiving IP packets. The techniques described herein apply equally to both access points and access terminals.
