Method And Apparatus For Generating Temperature Based Alerting Signals

View page
US Patent:
6344795, Feb 5, 2002
Filed:
Oct 19, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/421127
Inventors:
Narayan Lal Gehlot - Sayreville NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G08B 2100
US Classification:
340540, 340 758, 3404071, 3405731, 340640, 3406911, 34082519
Abstract:
An apparatus for providing a temperature based alerting signal to a user to alert the user to the occurrence of a particular or predetermined event. The temperature based alerting device may be incorporated into jewelry, garments, or a releasable strap and includes at least one spot heating element that is maintained in substantial contact with the users skin. Upon detected occurrence of the predetermined event, as for example an incoming telephone call or page, the user is silently alerted by a change in the temperature of the spot heating element in contact with the users skin. Subsequent action by the user, as for example answering of the incoming call or page, causes the temperature based alerting device to reset to an initial, non-alert state.

Pump Source Including Polarization Scrambling In Raman Amplified Optical Wdm Systems

View page
US Patent:
6657776, Dec 2, 2003
Filed:
Nov 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/989884
Inventors:
Narayan L. Gehlot - Sayreville NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H01S 300
US Classification:
359334, 3593413
Abstract:
A pump source for a fiber Raman amplifier is formed to include a polarization scrambler to reduce the effects of polarization dependent gain, particularly as used in a multiple input wavelength WDM optical system. The source utilizes a polarization scrambler coupled to the output of a pump laser, the scrambler controlled by a sinusoidal input signal to impart a randomness to the polarization of the pump signal. Thus, a random state of polarization of the pump signal, with respect to the various input signal wavelengths, improves the overall gain experienced by the system.

Pump Monitoring And Control In A Fiber Raman Amplifier

View page
US Patent:
6731428, May 4, 2004
Filed:
Nov 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/990231
Inventors:
Narayan L. Gehlot - Sayreville NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H01S 3108
US Classification:
359359, 3593413, 35934133
Abstract:
An arrangement for monitoring the performance of each pump source in a fiber Raman amplifier arrangement utilizes a set of unique âsignatureâ signals, each signature signal impressed on a different pump input signal. At the receiver, the signature signals are extracted from the received, amplified signal. If a particular signature signal is missing at the receiver, this is indicative of failure of its associated pump source at the transmitter. If a particular signature signal is noticeable weaker than other received signature signals (as evidenced by, for example a low SNR or high BER), this is indicative of a power loss in its associated pump source. Since each signature signal is chosen to be unique, the identity of each pump source can be easily ascertained. In one embodiment, a low data rate signal is impressed on an RF signal used to modulate the pump prior to be applied to the transmission fiber. Alternatively, the RF modulation signal associated with each pump source can be offset by a predetermined frequency and the frequency offset used as the signature.

Object Area Network

US Patent:
6812840, Nov 2, 2004
Filed:
Jan 23, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/055471
Inventors:
Narayan L. Gehlot - Sayreville NJ
Victor B. Lawrence - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G08B 1314
US Classification:
3405721, 3405731, 34082536
Abstract:
A monitoring and tracking system for monitoring and tracking an object may have a plurality of object area network elements. Each of the object area network elements may have a wireless communications unit and a GPS unit, wherein the GPS units are designed to facilitate the calculation of position data for each of the plurality of object area network elements.
