System And Method For Enhancing Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (“Nvis”) Communication Using Space-Time Coding

View page
US Patent:
7885354, Feb 8, 2011
Filed:
Apr 2, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/817731
Inventors:
Stephen G. Perlman - Palo Alto CA, US
Tim S. Cotter - Sunnyvale CA, US
Mike Cheponis - Los Gatos CA, US
Frank M. Caimi - Vero Beach FL, US
Assignee:
Rearden, LLC - San Francisco CA
International Classification:
H04L 27/20
US Classification:
375308, 375141, 375220, 375260, 375267, 375347
Abstract:
A system and method are described in which space-time coding techniques are used to transmit and receive multiple data streams within a near vertical incidence skywave (“NVIS”) communication system. Within the NVIS communication system, multiple independent data streams may be transmitted from a transmitting station at a high radiation angle, approaching or reaching 90 degrees. The data streams are reflected off of the ionosphere of the earth and received by one or more receiving stations. In one embodiment, the space-time coding techniques are multiple-input multiple-output (“MIMO”) signal communication techniques.

US Patent:
54554675, Oct 3, 1995
Filed:
Mar 2, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/204883
Inventors:
Steven J. Young - Milpitas CA
Mike Cheponis - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Apple Computer, Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H04B 500
US Classification:
307104
Abstract:
A computer that can be electrically coupled to an adapter with wireless inductive connectors. The adapter has a first primary inductive connector that provides power and a second secondary inductive connector that receives digital signals. The computer has a first secondary inductive connector that can receive power and a second primary inductive connector that provides digital signals. The connectors are located within the adapter and computer, so that when the computer is placed adjacent to the adapter, the inductive connectors became electrically coupled.

US Patent:
53250460, Jun 28, 1994
Filed:
Dec 18, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/810714
Inventors:
Steven J. Young - Milpitas CA
Mike Cheponis - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Apple Computer, Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H01F 2742
US Classification:
323356
Abstract:
A system that allows inductive connectors to be electrically coupled without having to mechanical align the same. The connectors have a primary coil coupled to a secondary coil. The primary coil transmits either power or digital signals to the secondary coil. The power induced onto the secondary coil is a function of the distance between coils. The farther apart the coils are, the less power is transmitted to the secondary coil. To insure that the proper level of power is received by the secondary coil, a feedback circuit is incorporated to vary the output of power on the primary coil as a function of the voltage induced onto the secondary connectors. If connectors are spaced apart beyond a predetermined distance, the feedback system increases the power on the primary coil.
