Starter Motor Having Clutch With Grooved Roller Elements

View page
US Patent:
20130074652, Mar 28, 2013
Filed:
Sep 24, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/244321
Inventors:
Joel M. Gray - Fishers IN, US
Michael E. Kirk - Greenfield IN, US
Balazs Palfai - Fishers IN, US
Jason W. Nipper - Anderson IN, US
Assignee:
REMY TECHNOLOGIES, LLC - Pendleton IN
International Classification:
F02N 15/02
F16D 41/066
US Classification:
74 7 C, 192 42
Abstract:
A clutch includes an outer clutch member, an inner clutch member, and a plurality of roller members. The outer clutch member defines an opening, and the inner clutch member is at least partially positioned within the opening. The inner clutch member includes a clutch surface. The plurality of roller members is at least partially positioned within the opening between the clutch surface and the outer clutch member. The roller members define a plurality of roller surfaces separated by at least one annular groove. Each of the roller members is displaceable within the opening to position the roller surfaces into engagement with the clutch surface to lock the inner clutch member into synchronous movement with the outer clutch member in response to movement of the inner clutch member in a rotational direction.

Starter System Having Controlling Relay Switch

View page
US Patent:
20180363617, Dec 20, 2018
Filed:
Aug 23, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/109816
Inventors:
- Pendleton IN, US
Michael E. Kirk - Greenfield IN, US
International Classification:
F02N 11/08
F02N 11/10
F02N 15/06
Abstract:
A starter system including a motor, a solenoid assembly having a solenoid switch, a pinion rotated by the motor and moveable into an engaging position in which an engine may be cranked and the solenoid switch is closed to energize the motor from an electric power source, and relay switch regulated by a controller and closed to apply electrical power to the solenoid assembly for actuating the solenoid switch. The controller repeatedly opens and closes relay switch during a starting operation if sensed motor energization voltage monitored by the controller falls below a predetermined threshold level within a predetermined time period after electrical power is applied to the solenoid assembly, whereby electrical power applications to the solenoid assembly are automatically repeated during a starting operation to correct “click-no-crank” events and prevent prolonged power application to the solenoid assembly. A related method is also disclosed.

System And Method For Detecting An Operating Motor

View page
US Patent:
20180216595, Aug 2, 2018
Filed:
Feb 1, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/422052
Inventors:
- Auburn Hills MI, US
Michael E. Kirk - Greenfield IN, US
Kurt Wachowski - Clarkston MI, US
International Classification:
F02N 11/08
B60R 16/02
Abstract:
A system for detecting operation of a motor includes a ripple voltage detector module including a ripple voltage detector unit, an input operatively connected to the ripple voltage detector unit and connectable to an alternator, and an output operatively connected to the ripple voltage detector unit and connectable to a starter motor control system. The ripple voltage detector module provides a motor operation signal to the starter motor control system upon detection of a ripple voltage produced by the alternator.

System With Multiple Starters And Smart Relay

View page
US Patent:
20180171958, Jun 21, 2018
Filed:
Dec 15, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/380427
Inventors:
- Auburn Hills MI, US
Michael E. Kirk - Greenfield IN, US
International Classification:
F02N 11/00
F02N 11/08
F02N 15/02
Abstract:
The present disclosure teaches a system for starting an engine in which at least two starter assemblies are employed to crank a ring gear of an engine. At least one of the starter assemblies has a “smart relay” configured with an auto-retry function that detects abutment and corrects it by powering the solenoid off and then on again. Advantageously, multiple starter assemblies can be in electrical communication with one another so that click-no-crank events in the starter assemblies can be corrected.
