US Patent:
8054046, Nov 8, 2011
Filed:
Jan 23, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/018653
Inventors:
Jian Lin - Beverly Hills MI, US
Brian J. Koch - Berkley MI, US
Damon R. Frisch - Troy MI, US
Michael J. Gielniak - Romeo MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
H02J 7/04
US Classification:
320156, 320104, 320136, 903903
Abstract:
A method for rapidly determining an initial diffusion voltage (V)as a starting point in calculating a diffusion voltage in an electro-chemical cell (e. g. , a battery used in an automotive vehicle) includes obtaining a time difference tbetween a time when the cell was last turned-OFF and a time when the cell was next turned-ON, selecting a starting diffusion voltage (V)based on t, determining a trial diffusion voltage Vbased on a diffusion circuit model and (V), calculating an error voltage V=(V)−|V−V| where Vand Vare cell voltages at turn-OFF and turn-ON respectively, repeating the foregoing determining and calculating steps using for each iteration (V)=(V)+Vuntil Vis less than or equal to a first predetermined tolerance amount ε, storing in a memory a value of Vcorresponding to the condition V≦ε, and setting (V)equal to the just stored value of V. A further diffusion voltage Vis then determined using the same diffusion circuit model and the just obtained (V)and is advantageously used by a controller in an electric propulsion vehicle to determine a state of charge of the propulsion battery.

Sep 25, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/238204
Inventors:
Wei Liu - Warren MI, US
Michael J. Gielniak - Atlanta GA, US
Jian Lin - Beverly Hills MI, US
Brian Koch - Berkley MI, US
Damon R. Frisch - Troy MI, US
Joseph M. Lograsso - Troy MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
702 63, 702 57, 320132, 320150, 324426, 324427, 324428, 324429, 324430, 324431, 324432, 324433, 324434, 324435, 324436, 324437
Abstract:
Methods and systems for determining a state of charge of a battery are provided. A first component of the state of charge is calculated based on a first property of the battery. A second component of the state of charge is calculated based on a second property of the battery. The first component of the state of charge is weighted based on a rate of change of the first property relative to a change of the state of charge. The second component of the state of charge is weighted based on a rate of change of the second property relative to a change of the state of charge. The state of charge is determined based on the first and second weighted components.

Oct 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/927785
Inventors:
Michael J. Gielniak - Romeo MI, US
Assignee:
GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC. - Detroit MI

G08B 21/00
H01M 10/48
US Classification:
34063612, 702 63
Abstract:
A system for and method of estimating the state-of-age of a secondary cell utilizing an adaptive group filter algorithm, includes battery current, voltage, and temperature sensors, a communication device, and a controller communicatively coupled to the sensors and device, configured to filter data by analyzing only sample data points from instantaneous charge or discharge events, selecting only a sample of n instantaneous points for further regression, including n/2 charge event points and n/2 discharge event points, and separately averaging the charge and discharge event points, and further configured to determine the state-of-age by determining a resistance slope based on the rate of current and voltage change between the averages of the points, and matching the slope to a calibrated scalar or relational database.
