Method For The Preparation Of A Poly(Arylene Ether)-Polyolefin Composition, And Composition Prepared Thereby

View page
US Patent:
6627701, Sep 30, 2003
Filed:
Nov 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/682929
Inventors:
Adeyinka Adedeji - Albany NY
John C. Haylock - Schenectady NY
Robert Hossan - Delmar NY
William Pecak - Cohoes NY
Mark Victor Vendon - Westerlo NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Pittsfield MA
International Classification:
C08L 5300
US Classification:
525 68, 525 69, 525 89
Abstract:
A poly(arylene ether)-polyolefin composition is prepared by melt-blending a poly (arylene ether), a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin, a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, and an unhydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene to form a first blend, and melt-blending the first blend and a polyolefin to form a second blend. Reinforcing fillers may, optionally, be added during formation of the second blend or in an additional step. Multiple mixing elements, low throughput, and high extruder rotations per minute may be used to achieve high energy mixing of the first and second blends. Compositions prepared by the method exhibit an improved balance of impact strength, stiffness, and heat resistance, as well as reduced variability of physical properties.

A reinforcing filler and/or an ethylene/alpha-olefin elastomeric copolymer may, optionally, be added during formation of the second blend or in an additional step. Multiple mixing elements, low throughput, and high extruder rotations per minute may be used to achieve high energy mixing of the first and second blends. Compositions prepared by the method exhibit an improved balance of impact strength, stiffness, and heat resistance, as well as reduced variability of physical properties.

Transparent, Flame Retardant Poly(Arylene Ether) Blends

View page
US Patent:
20030125430, Jul 3, 2003
Filed:
Jun 26, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/064262
Inventors:
Adeyinka Adedeji - Albany NY, US
Mark Vendon - Westerlo NY, US
International Classification:
C08K005/49
US Classification:
524/115000
Abstract:
A transparent, flame retardant poly(arylene ether) blend comprises a poly(arylene ether) resin, rubber-modified poly(styrene), optional impact modifier, optional poly (styrene), and an organic phosphate flame retardant or a mixture of organic phosphate flame retardants. Use of the organic phosphate flame retardants was unexpectedly found to provide flame retardance without affecting the transparency of objects molded from the blend.

Semi-Transparent Blends Of Polyphenylene Ether, Styrenic Resins, And Elastomeric Block Copolymers

View page
US Patent:
62746707, Aug 14, 2001
Filed:
Dec 21, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/216903
Inventors:
Adeyinka Adedeji - Albany NY
Mark V. Vendon - Westerlo NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Pittsfield MA
International Classification:
C08L 7112
US Classification:
525 92D
Abstract:
The invention relates to a semi-transparent thermoplastic composition of a polyphenylene ether resin, a non-elastomeric styrenic resin, and an unsaturated elastomeric styrenic block copolymer. The compositions of the invention may also contain at least one additive selected from the group consisting of stabilizers, dyes, pigments, mineral oil, and mixtures thereof and exhibit enhanced physical properties, especially ductility. The invention also relates to articles formed out of the compositions of the invention as well as methods to make the compositions.

Poly(Phenylene Ether) Composition And Article

View page
US Patent:
20160326368, Nov 10, 2016
Filed:
Dec 16, 2014
Appl. No.:
15/109739
Inventors:
- Bergen op Zoom, NL
Kim G. Balfour - Selkirk NY, US
Mark Victor Vendon - Selkirk NY, US
International Classification:
C08L 71/12
Abstract:
A composition is prepared by melt blending specific amounts of components including a poly(phenylene ether), a first hydrogenated block copolymer (HBC1) that includes a polystyrene-poly(ethylene-butylene)-polystyrene triblock copolymer having a polystyrene content of 50 to 75 weight percent, and a second hydrogenated block copolymer. The second hydrogenated block copolymer can selected from five different hydrogenated block copolymer types and their combinations. The composition exhibits high light transmittance, low haze, and high impact strength at low temperature, which make it useful for molding objects such as containers for storage in refrigerators and freezers.
