Gonio Lens With Geometric Reference

View page
US Patent:
7766480, Aug 3, 2010
Filed:
Jul 17, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/505346
Inventors:
Raymond D. Graham - Renton WA, US
Sungjun J. Hwang - Victor NY, US
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA, US
Assignee:
Ocular Instruments, Inc. - Bellevue WA
International Classification:
A61B 3/00
A61B 3/10
US Classification:
351219, 351221
Abstract:
A gonio lens is provided including a contact lens element and a geometric reference member. The contact lens element has an optical axis, a concave posterior contact surface to be placed in optical contact with the cornea of a patient's eye, and an anterior surface. The geometric reference member, such as a scale, is provided near the concave posterior contact surface of the contact lens element. The configuration and location of the geometric reference member are chosen to provide an image of the geometric reference member adjacent to an image of the periphery of the anterior chamber of the eye of a patient within a field of view of the contact lens element when the contact lens element is placed on the eye of a patient. The two images are formed relative to each other such that they are simultaneously in focus to permit visual comparison between the two.

Laser Assisted Therapeutic Agent Delivery Into A Targeted Tissue

View page
US Patent:
8394076, Mar 12, 2013
Filed:
May 6, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/436511
Inventors:
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA, US
International Classification:
A61M 31/00
US Classification:
604501, 604 20
Abstract:
The present invention involves selectively breaking down or altering a blocking tissue by irradiating the blocking tissue with a laser irradiation. Breaking down the blocking tissue allows the delivery of therapeutic agents through the blocking tissue to a target tissue. An area of the blocking tissue is selected for treatment. The selected area is irradiated with a laser to induce an alteration or breakdown of the blocking tissue. Areas not irradiated are not affected. Once the selected area of the blocking tissue is treated, a therapeutic agent can be delivered to the selected area and passed through the altered or broken down blocking tissue to the target tissue. The blocking tissue will then undergo a healing response after a period of time. The present invention may be used to treat the retina or subretinal space of a patient's eye through the blocking tissue of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE).

Surgical Laser Device Utilizing A Visible Laser Diode

View page
US Patent:
8574224, Nov 5, 2013
Filed:
Oct 18, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/906372
Inventors:
Tarek A. Shazly - Reading MA, US
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/20
US Classification:
606 10, 606 3, 606 17
Abstract:
Systems, apparatuses, and methods for a compact surgical device include a laser unit and one or more laser outlet assemblies. The laser unit has a power regulator, one or more diode laser assemblies, each having a single diode laser source, and a laser trigger mechanism. The laser unit can emit an aiming light beam and a treatment laser beam either both from the same single diode laser or from two separate single diode lasers. The beam can pass through the one or more laser outlet assemblies. The aiming light beam can have a first energy level. The treatment laser beam can have a second energy level that is substantially greater than the first energy level of the aiming light beam.

Selective Photostimulation To Induce Cell Proliferation

View page
US Patent:
20110306919, Dec 15, 2011
Filed:
Jan 21, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/863281
Inventors:
Mark A. Latina - Reading MA, US
Martin L. Yarmush - Newton MA, US
International Classification:
A61M 37/00
A61N 5/067
A61N 5/06
US Classification:
604 20, 607 88, 607 89
Abstract:
The invention is based, at least in part, on the discovery that if a tissue is irradiated with a sublethal dose of radiation, e.g., from a laser, that pigmented cells in the tissue are selectively stimulated to proliferate and to produce higher levels of certain mitogenic factors and growth factors such as platelet derived growth factor (PDGF). In particular, the various parameters of a pulsed laser beam, such as power, pulse duration, total radiation energy (‘fluence’), wavelength, and if multiple pulses are used, the pulse rate and total number of pulses, are carefully selected and controlled to minimize killing the irradiated pigmented cells.

Nasolacrimal Duct Occlusion Device And Method

View page
US Patent:
55228372, Jun 4, 1996
Filed:
Jun 17, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/262002
Inventors:
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA
International Classification:
A61B 17122
A61F 508
US Classification:
606201
Abstract:
A method and device for nasolacrimal duct occlusion during eye medication provides a device having a pair of joined legs terminating in angled elements for fitting into the medial canthal area and compressing the nasolacrimal ducts. The device is placed over the nasal bridge during, and for a short time after, eye medication.

Selective Laser Targeting Of Pigmented Ocular Cells

View page
US Patent:
55495966, Aug 27, 1996
Filed:
Oct 20, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/545887
Inventors:
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA
Assignee:
The General Hospital Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 1736
US Classification:
606 4
Abstract:
A method of damaging pigmented intraocular cells, a patient with a disease, which involves selectively damaging pigmented cells in an intraocular area by irradiating the area with laser radiation of radiant exposure between about 0. 01 and about 5 Joules/cm. sup. 2, while sparing nonpigmented cells and collagenous structures within the irradiated area. The method is useful for the treatment of glaucoma, intraocular melanoma, and macular edema.

Non-Invasive Sclerostomy

View page
US Patent:
51527600, Oct 6, 1992
Filed:
Aug 15, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/746209
Inventors:
Mark A. Latina - North Andover MA
Assignee:
The General Hospital Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 1732
US Classification:
606 6
Abstract:
A non-invasive method for treatment of glaucoma by selective ablation of sclera of a living human eye. The method includes providing a slit lamp laser system including a source of pulsed laser light and a gonio lens adapted to withstand pulsed laser light having energy of greater than 100 mJ pulse. The method further includes focusing the laser light on the sclera, and adjusting the light to a spot diameter of between 100 and 300 microns, a pulse width of between 1 and 30 microseconds, a pulse energy of between 75 andn 250 mJ, and a cone angle of between 8 and 15 degrees. The sclera is then repeatedly illuminated with single pulses of laser light until the sclera is perforated.
