System And Method For Selecting Data Rates Of Data Signals

View page
US Patent:
7564898, Jul 21, 2009
Filed:
Aug 12, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/202476
Inventors:
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL, US
Assignee:
ADTRAN, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04B 3/46
H04L 7/00
US Classification:
375227, 375377
Abstract:
A transceiver comprises a communication line interface, memory, and logic. The memory stores predefined noise spectra, and the logic is configured to analyze an initialization signal received from the communication line coupled to the communication line interface during an initialization phase that precedes a data phase. The logic is configured to automatically select one of the predefined noise spectra based on the initialization signal and to combine the selected noise spectrum with the initialization signal to calculate a value. The logic is configured to perform a comparison between the value and a threshold and to make a determination, based on the comparison, whether a data signal to be communicated in the data phase will be spectrally compatible, if the data signal is transmitted at a data rate of the initialization signal. The logic is further configured to select a data rate for the data signal based on the determination thereby ensuring that the data signal is spectrally compatible.

Systems And Methods For Discovering Pme Bonding Groups

View page
US Patent:
7693090, Apr 6, 2010
Filed:
Nov 14, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/599161
Inventors:
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL, US
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04L 12/28
H04L 12/50
US Classification:
370254, 370368
Abstract:
The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for discovering PME bonding groups. In one exemplary embodiment, a plurality of communication links are terminated by physical medium entities (PMEs). In this regard, each link is terminated at one end via a network PME and at another end via a remote PME at a customer premises. Each of the PMEs has a transceiver that is allowed to train during a training phase that precedes a data phase. After training, discovery of PME bonding groups is performed via data communicated over data phase control channels, which are operational while links are operational in the data phase, transmitting data using the Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) encapsulation. For example, the control channel data may be communicated over a link-level embedded operations channel (EOC). In another example, the control channel data may be communicated using 64/65 Byte (B) code words.

Repeater For Regenerating Spectrally Compatible Signals Along A Telecommunication Line

View page
US Patent:
7869490, Jan 11, 2011
Filed:
Aug 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/929814
Inventors:
Arlynn Wilson - Huntsville AL, US
Kevin Schneider - Huntsville AL, US
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL, US
Assignee:
ADTRAN, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04L 25/20
US Classification:
375211, 375242, 375222, 375252, 375223
Abstract:
A repeater for regenerating signals communicated along a telecommunication line uses a constellation providing a sufficiently high constellation density to ensure that regenerated signals are spectrally compatible. In one exemplary embodiment, such a repeater is configured to implement a method comprising the steps of: receiving first data signals from a first telecommunication line segment; demodulating the first data signals thereby recovering digital data using a constellation that provides a first constellation density; modulating second data signals with the digital data; transmitting the second data signals across a second telecommunication line segment that is bound within a cable; selecting a second constellation density for use in the modulating step such that the second data signals are spectrally compatible with other signals transmitted across a third telecommunication line segment bound within the cable, wherein the second constellation density is higher than the first constellation density.

System And Method For Propagating Tdm Fault Information Through A Packet Network

View page
US Patent:
8331244, Dec 11, 2012
Filed:
Dec 11, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/636223
Inventors:
David Eric Jones - Huntsville AL, US
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL, US
Harold Lloyd Boling - Madison AL, US
Assignee:
ADTRAN, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
G01R 31/08
US Classification:
3702411, 370244, 370250, 370442, 370467, 709244, 709246, 709253
Abstract:
A communication system for propagating time division multiplexing (TDM) fault notifications has a first interworking function (IWF) of a packet network and a second IWF of the packet network. The second IWF detects a TDM fault of a TDM network and transmits continuity check messages (CCMs) to the first IWF. Further, the second IWF controls the CCMs in response to a detection of the TDM fault such that a TDM fault notification is propagated from the second IWF to the first IWF based on the CCMs, and the first IWF propagates the TDM fault notification to a second TDM node via a TDM signal.

System And Method For Extending Connectivity Tests Through A Packet Network

View page
US Patent:
8526313, Sep 3, 2013
Filed:
Apr 20, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/763609
Inventors:
David Eric Jones - Huntsville AL, US
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL, US
Harold Lloyd Boling - Madison AL, US
Assignee:
ADTRAN, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04L 12/26
US Classification:
370249
Abstract:
A communication system extending Ethernet Operation and Management (OAM) Loopback Message (LBM) and Loopback Replay (LBR) functionality into a time division multiplexing (TDM) domain has a first interworking function (IWF) of an Ethernet network that transmits an Ethernet Operation and Management (OAM) Loopback Message (LBM) having a first type length value (TLV) field. The first IWF controls the first TLV field to indicate that a connectivity test is to extend beyond the Ethernet network. The communication system further has a second IWF of the Ethernet network that receives the Ethernet OAM LBM and interprets the first TLV field. In addition, the second IWF performs a TDM connectivity test across a TDM connection in response to the Ethernet OAM LBM and based on the first TLV field and transmits a reply for the Ethernet OAM LBM to the first IWF, the reply prompted by the LBM and comprising data based on the TDM connectivity test.

Appl. No.:
9/143029
Inventors:
Kevin W. Schneider - Huntsville AL
Richard L. Goodson - Huntsville AL
Marc Kimpe - Huntsville AL
Tanya Morton - Nashville TN
Assignee:
Adtran, Inc. - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H03H 730
H03H 740
H03K 5159
US Classification:
375232
Abstract:
In a data communication system having a channel with time-varying impairments and further having a transmitter with a precoder, a method and apparatus for updating the precoder coefficients. The method and apparatus is based on the arrangement of a duplicate precoder and correction filter in the receiver, where the correction filter generates incremental coefficients. The incremental coefficients are sent via a back channel to the transmitter and added to the current values of the precoder coefficients. The method and apparatus provide DFE-like performance and do not have the delay problems associated with DFEs.
