Method Of And Apparatus For Directional Drilling

View page
US Patent:
6918453, Jul 19, 2005
Filed:
Jul 2, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/613519
Inventors:
Marc Haci - Houston TX, US
Eric E. Maidla - Sugar Land TX, US
Assignee:
Noble Engineering and Development Ltd. - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B044/00
US Classification:
175 26, 175 61
Abstract:
A method of and system for directional drilling reduces the friction between the drill string and the well bore. A downhole drilling motor is connected to a drilling rig at the surface by a drill string. The drilling motor is oriented at a selected tool face angle. The drill string is rotated at the surface in a first direction until a first torque magnitude is reached without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is then rotated in the opposite direction until a second torque magnitude is reached, again without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is rotated back and forth between the first and second torque magnitudes. Pressure inside the drill string is measured, and the first and second torque magnitudes are adjusted in response to changes in the pressure.

Continuous On-Bottom Directional Drilling Method And System

US Patent:
7096979, Aug 29, 2006
Filed:
Jul 1, 2003
Appl. No.:

Inventors:
Marc Haci - Houston TX, US
Eric E. Maidla - Sugar Land TX, US
Assignee:
Noble Drilling Services Inc. - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 7/04
US Classification:
175 61, 175 26, 175 45, 175 73, 175103
Abstract:
A method of and system for directional drilling alternate between rotary drilling and sliding drilling with the bit remaining in continuous contact with the bottom of the bore hole.

Method Of Directional Drilling With Steerable Drilling Motor

View page
US Patent:
7810584, Oct 12, 2010
Filed:
Sep 20, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/524009
Inventors:
Marc Haci - Katy TX, US
Eric E. Maidla - Sugar Land TX, US
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 7/04
E21B 4/00
E21B 3/00
E21B 7/20
US Classification:
175 61, 175 92, 175170, 175 27
Abstract:
Drilling a bore hole comprises rotary drilling at a first rotation rate until a first target value is substantially met, changing the first rotation rate to a second rotation rate when a trigger is substantially met, and then drilling at the second rotation rate until a second target value is substantially met. Preferably, the second rotation rate is substantially zero, so the drilling at the second rotation rate is slide drilling. Finally, the steps of rotary drilling at a first rotation rate, changing the rotation rate to a second rotation rate, and drilling at the second rotation rate are repeated.

Completion String Deployment In A Subterranean Well

View page
US Patent:
8534354, Sep 17, 2013
Filed:
Mar 5, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/718423
Inventors:
Eric E. Maidla - Sugar Land TX, US
Marc Haci - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 43/10
US Classification:
16625001, 166381, 175171
Abstract:
A method for deploying a completion string in a previously drilled borehole includes rotating the string at the surface while axially urging the assembly deeper into the borehole. This rotation is preferably only partially transferred down the completion string such that a lower portion of the string typically remains rotationally stationary with respect to the borehole. The completion string may be reciprocated upwards and downwards from the surface so as to enable the lower portion of the completion string to rotate. The completion string may alternatively be rotated back and forth, alternating between first and second rotational directions so as to maintain an applied surface torque below a predetermined threshold. The invention has been found to reduce drag between a completion assembly and the wall of a previously drilled borehole.

US Patent:

Filed:
Dec 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/325639
Inventors:
Marc Haci - Houston TX, US
Eric Maidla - Sugar Land TX, US
International Classification:
E21B044/00
US Classification:
175/026000
Abstract:

The drilling motor is oriented at a selected tool face angle. The drill string is rotated at said surface location in a first direction until a first torque magnitude without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is then rotated in the opposite direction until a second torque magnitude is reached, again without changing the tool face angle. The drill string is rocked back and forth between the first and second torque magnitudes.

Systems Using Continuous Pipe For Deviated Wellbore Operations

Filed:
Mar 23, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/210449
Inventors:
- HOUSTON TX, US
MARC HACI - HOUSTON TX, US
Assignee:
MUST HOLDING LLC - HOUSTON TX
International Classification:
E21B 7/06
E21B 17/20
E21B 19/08
E21B 19/22
Abstract:
A drilling system for use in rotary coiled tubing drilling of deviated wellbores is provided. The drilling system includes a base, a derrick mounted on the base, a top drive system mounted on the derrick; and a coiled tubing module. The coiled tubing module is adapted to move a coiled tubing in and out of the deviated wellbore and coupled to the top drive system on the derrick. A capsule of the coiled tubing module, which holds a coil of coiled tubing, is carried and rotated by the top drive system to transfer torque to the coiled tubing moving in and out of the deviated wellbore to perform rotary coiled tubing drilling.

US Patent:
20190078423, Mar 14, 2019
Filed:
Nov 12, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/188183
Inventors:
- HOUSTON TX, US
MARC HACI - HOUSTON TX, US
Assignee:
MUST HOLDING LLC - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 43/24
E21B 43/12
E21B 43/16
Abstract:
A well system for recovering hydrocarbons such as heavy crude oil from subsurface reservoirs is provided. The well system includes a single continuous wellbore extending from a surface entry opening to a surface exit opening. A substantially horizontal section of the wellbore is formed within the subsurface reservoir. In one embodiment, a plurality of heater-lifter units are movably disposed within the substantially horizontal wellbore section. The heater-lifter units are configured to apply heat to subsurface reservoir surrounding the substantially horizontal wellbore section to mobilize the hydrocarbons. A lifting mechanism is configured to move the heater-lifter units in bidirectional manner within the continuous wellbore so that the produced low viscosity hydrocarbons are mechanically lifted to the surface.
