Gas Bearing Roll Shell Assembly With Selective Drive Means

View page
US Patent:
40307840, Jun 21, 1977
Filed:
Jun 18, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/697350
Inventors:
Donald J. King - Huron OH
Loren E. Lura - Sandusky OH
Ewalt Maurushat - Huron OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F16C 1716
US Classification:
308107
Abstract:
A gas bearing roll shell assembly comprises an outer rotatable roll shell carried on an externally pressurized gas bearing between the roll shell and a stationary axle. The roll shell has end rings, one of which has turbine buckets recessed into its bore. The axle carries a valve body having part-chordal passages aligned with the turbine buckets and a rotatable valve for selectively driving the roll shell in one direction or the other. In a modified form, selection is limited to driving in a single direction by a pin and slot arrangement. The assembly is especially useful as an overrun roller in textile machinery involving the high speed transport of threads, yarns or the like.

Antifriction Bearing With Multiple Piece Race

View page
US Patent:
41791673, Dec 18, 1979
Filed:
Dec 21, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/862948
Inventors:
Loren E. Lura - Sandusky OH
Philip B. Zeigler - Port Clinton OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F16C 3330
US Classification:
308189A
Abstract:
A rear wheel bearing assembly has a double row of balls and a two piece inner race. One race piece is positioned on the other race piece to give a desired preload or end play and maintained in such position by a pair of semicircular hardened and ground keeper ring parts of selected width. The keeper ring parts engage the one race piece and are retained in a groove of the second race piece by a retainer ring secured to the second race piece by a swaging or rolling operation.

Energy Absorbing Mounting For Vehicle Bumper

View page
US Patent:
41780280, Dec 11, 1979
Filed:
Dec 1, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/856592
Inventors:
Loren E. Lura - Sandusky OH
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B60R 1900
US Classification:
293135
Abstract:
This energy absorber yieldably couples a bumper to support structure on a vehicle and comprises a spring bracket assembly which includes a pair of diverging spring arms which carry pins on the ends thereof. A preloaded yieldable energy absorbing band of resilient plastic material is stretched across the arms, by attachment to the spaced pins. On impact of the bumper, the pins are displaced outwardly from one another as the spring arms are deflected to stretch the energy absorbing band. The deflection of the spring arms and the stretching of the energy absorber absorbs impact energy.
