US Patent:
6697727, Feb 24, 2004
Filed:
Feb 27, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/086083
Inventors:
Stanton E. Miller - Fort Wayne IN
Chris L. Wilson - Fort Wayne IN
Lawrence D. Hasfjord - Fort Wayne IN
Erik C. Wilson - Fort Wayne IN
Brian P. Marshall - Fort Wayne IN
David V. Rodgers - Bloomingdale IL
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrenville IL
International Classification:
B60K 4120
US Classification:
701 70, 701 71, 701 48, 701 82, 192215, 192216, 192218, 477107, 477118
Abstract:
A method of operating a retarder control system for a drivetrain retarder such as an engine compression brake of a heavy-duty truck vehicle is disclosed. The method of operation includes three novel subsets each of which controls the operational state and the resistance level at which the drivetrain retarder is operated dependent at least partially upon one or more factors including speeds of one or more drivetrain components, vehicle speed, rotational speed of one or more undriven wheels, position of a brake control member, elapsed time of activation of a brake control member and/or elapsed time from a change in a selected resistance level at which the retarder control system is commanded to effect operation of the drivetrain retarder.

Vehicle With Engine Idle-Management System

View page
US Patent:
6836718, Dec 28, 2004
Filed:
Apr 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/408505
Inventors:
Lawrence D. Hasfjord - Fort Wayne IN
Michael P. Harding - Fort Wayne IN
Kenneth Bultemeier, Jr. - Fort Wayne IN
Richard S. Justice - Fort Wayne IN
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Warrensville IL
International Classification:
G06F 1900
US Classification:
701 54, 701112, 1233391, 12333918, 12333924
Abstract:
A vehicle according to the present invention has an internal combustion engine that is controlled by an engine-control computer that is operable, when the vehicle is parked, to operate in an idle-management mode to automatically start and stop idling operation of the internal combustion engine in order to maintain desirable electrical system energy levels, maintain desirable fluid temperatures of the internal combustion engine, and/or enable maintenance of comfortable occupant cabin temperatures. Each vehicle according to the present invention has a unique configuration of safety-interlock provisions that affect when and if an idle-management mode of operation of the engine-control computer is initiated and/or maintained.

Motor Vehicle Braking System And Method

View page
US Patent:
8333441, Dec 18, 2012
Filed:
Jul 15, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/503098
Inventors:
Steven Randall Lovell - Fort Wayne IN, US
Lawrence D. Hasfjord - Chillicothe IL, US
David Bowers - Fort Wayne IN, US
Byron Dunham - Haviland OH, US
Assignee:
International Truck Intellectual Property Company, LLC - Lisle IL
International Classification:
G06F 17/00
US Classification:
303 3, 701 70
Abstract:
A motor vehicle () has a chassis () with wheels () on which the motor vehicle travels, a powertrain having an engine () coupled to at least one of the wheels, a primary brake system () for braking the motor vehicle via foundation brakes at the wheels, and a secondary brake system for braking the vehicle via at least one powertrain brake mechanism () that can apply brake torque to at least one of the wheels to which the powertrain is coupled. The primary brake system has a mechanical operator () that when operated by a driver causes pressure to be created in the primary brake system for operating the foundation brakes to apply brake torque correlated with magnitude of the pressure. A device () signals a controller () that the foundation brakes are being applied. A selector () available to the driver signals the controller for selectively enabling use of the secondary brake system in conjunction with the primary brake system.

Method For Operating An Engine Of A Machine

View page
US Patent:
20170030280, Feb 2, 2017
Filed:
Oct 11, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/290956
Inventors:
- Peoria IL, US
Nathan S. Pauli - Peoria IL, US
Lawrence D. Hasfjord - Chillicothe IL, US
Brian A. Byers - Decatur IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
F02D 41/10
F02D 41/26
F02D 31/00
Abstract:
A method for operating an engine of a machine is provided. The method determines a first engine operating speed of the engine from an engine speed detection module using a controller and then determines a current throttle position of the machine using a throttle detection module using the controller. The method further includes calculating a throttle-to-minimum engine operating speed map based on a correlation of the current throttle position and the first engine operating speed using the controller. The throttle-to-minimum engine operating speed map is lesser than the first engine operating speed. The method selectively regulates a current operating speed of the engine based on the throttle-to-minimum engine operating speed map using the controller, if the trigger event persists. The method selectively regulates the current operating speed of the engine based on the first engine operating speed using the controller, if the trigger event does not persist.
