Method And Apparatus For Managing Energy Usage Of Processors While Executing Protocol State Machines

View page
US Patent:
7260106, Aug 21, 2007
Filed:
Jan 24, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/056160
Inventors:
Rajendra Yavatkar - Portland OR, US
Lakshman Krishnamurthy - Portland OR, US
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H04L 12/54
H04L 12/26
G06F 1/26
G08B 5/22
H04B 1/04
US Classification:
370428, 370252, 713300, 713322, 340 733, 4551275
Abstract:
A method and apparatus of implementing protocol state machines that conserve energy on energy conscious devices is disclosed. Under this method, most of the energy consuming protocol state machine context invocations or operations are aggregated in time and are scheduled at regular intervals. Such an aggregation leads to many contexts executing concurrently in a burst prior to entering a dormant state. Thus, resource usage can reach a predictable rate pattern of idle and active cycles. With such a pattern, it is possible to take advantage of the energy saving features of processors by downshifting the processor clock speed and use of other resources such as peripherals and buses. The intervals are configured to achieve a tradeoff between timely execution and energy consumption. The aggregation operates across two dimensions, namely, multiple instances of a protocol state machine and multiple layers of protocols in a layered architecture.

Reducing Co-Interference On A Multi-Radio Platform

View page
US Patent:
8185102, May 22, 2012
Filed:
Aug 27, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/845137
Inventors:
Xue Yang - Portland OR, US
Lakshman Krishnamurthy - Portland OR, US
Xingang Guo - Portland OR, US
Jing Z. Zhu - Hillsboro OR, US
Assignee:
Intel Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H04W 4/00
H04W 40/00
H04B 7/00
US Classification:
4554261, 455445, 370310
Abstract:
A wireless communications device in a first network with contention-based access may send a special frame to one or more other devices in the first network, informing them that it will not be available to receive any transmissions during a specified time period. The frame may also specify a delay period, indicating when the period of unavailability will start. When the device sending the special frame also has a co-located radio that operates in a second network that uses centrally-controlled scheduling, this special frame may be used to prevent other devices in the first network from sending it any transmissions while the co-located radio is communicating in the second network, thereby reducing the chance of interference between the two co-located radios.
