An information storage and retrieval system including an information containing cartridge and an apparatus for retrieving information therefrom is disclosed herein. The cartridge contains its information within a housing having an opening for gaining access to the information stored therein by the retrieval apparatus. At the same time, the cartridge housing carries a cover movable between a first position for covering the opening in order to protect its interior from dust and other elements in the ambient surroundings and a second position for uncovering the opening in order to gain access to the information stored within the cartridge.

A disc type of information storage and retrieval system is disclosed herein. This system utilizes a cartridge type of information storage disc arrangement including a rotating disc and its own bearing pin about which the disc rotates and an information retrieval arrangement including means for supporting the disc arrangement in an operating position. The disc arrangement and the information retrieval arrangement include cooperating means for moving a read head forming part of the retrieval arrangement in one direction along a straight line path in response to the clockwise rotation of the rotating disc and in the opposite direction along the same path in response to the counterclockwise rotation of the rotating disc. The overall assembly includes other features as well.

At the same time, the cartridge housing carries a cover movable between a first position for covering the opening in order to protect its interior, especially the magnetic tape, from dust and other elements in the ambient surroundings and a second position for uncovering the opening in order to gain access to the tape.
