Abstract:
This invention relates to a method to introduce multiple catalysts into a gas or slurry phase reactor comprising: (a) introducing one or more olefins and a first catalyst and an activator into the reactor and allowing the olefins to polymerize, (b) obtaining a polyolefin, (c) introducing a second catalyst and an optional activator into the first catalyst/activator composition and thereafter introducing the combination into the reactor and allowing the olefins to polymerize. This invention further relates to a method to introduce multiple catalysts into a gas or slurry phase reactor comprising: (a) introducing one or more olefins, a first catalyst and an activator, and a second catalyst and an optional activator into the reactor, wherein the all the catalysts and activators are combined together prior to being introduced into the reactor.

Method Of Polymerizing Olefins Using Unsupported Catalyst Compositions

View page
US Patent:
6426394, Jul 30, 2002
Filed:
Dec 10, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/458334
Inventors:
Kersten Anne Erickson - South Charleston WV
Jody M. Moffett - Charleston WV
Assignee:
Union Carbide Chemicals Plastics Technology Corporation - Danbury CT
International Classification:
C08F 442
US Classification:
526160, 526348, 526901, 526943, 526119, 526158, 502152
Abstract:
Methods of polymerizing olefins in the gas phase using unsupported catalyst compositions are disclosed. At least one olefin monomer is polymerized in a gas phase reactor in the presence of an unsupported liquid catalyst composition whereby the method reduces reactor fouling by maintaining the partial pressure of the primary olefin monomer that is polymerized below about 240 psi. in the reactor. The invention is particularly useful for, but is not limited to polymerizing propylene or copolymerizing propylene with olefins having two or more carbon atoms. The method described herein produces a polymer product having controlled, uniform particle size, narrow molecular weight distribution, high bulk density and stereoregularity, and prevents and/or inhibits reactor fouling during catalyst delivery and during polymerization.
