Internal Reinforcement For Hollow Structural Elements

View page
US Patent:
6341467, Jan 29, 2002
Filed:
Nov 16, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/440746
Inventors:
Joseph S. Wycech - Grosse Pointe Shores MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
E04C 330
US Classification:
527214, 527291, 527351, 527951
Abstract:
A reinforced beam has an internal I-beam structure with opposed adhesive foam layers. The foam layers are extruded, cut to length and placed on opposed surfaces of the I-beam. When the reinforced beam is heated. The adhesive layers expand to secure the I-beam in place.

Reinforcement Laminate

US Patent:
6372334, Apr 16, 2002
Filed:
Mar 19, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/273107
Inventors:
Joseph S Wycech - Grosse Pointe Woods MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulphs Mills PA
International Classification:
B32B 326
US Classification:
4283166, 428158, 428177, 428218, 4283171, 4283191
Abstract:
A tri-laminate body panel stiffener includes two polymer layers with or without a backing. One of the layers is a compliant foam layer mounted against a substrate while the other layer is a rigid foam layer mounted against the compliant foam layer. In another aspect of the invention the laminate comprises a backing member having an expandable foam mounted thereto with two or more opposing edges of the laminate being of non-straight construction such as being wavy or saw tooth. A pattern of holes may be formed through the foam and backing layers.

Composite Laminate Automotive Structures

US Patent:
6406078, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Mar 2, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/517780
Inventors:
Joseph S. Wycech - Grosse Pointe Shores MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
B60R 1922
US Classification:
293120, 527351
Abstract:
A structural member having at least two non-coplanar surfaces is reinforced by providing a drop in insert between the surfaces. The insert is a carrier having an expandable structural foam intimately bonded to the carrier. When the foam is expanded, the foam becomes intimately bonded to the surfaces of the structural member to reinforce the structural member.

Reinforcement Of Hollow Sections Using Extrusions And A Polymer Binding Layer

View page
US Patent:
6455126, Sep 24, 2002
Filed:
Mar 2, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/517152
Inventors:
Joseph S. Wycech - Grosse Pointe Shores MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
B32B 302
US Classification:
428122, 527931, 293109, 293120, 293136, 296188, 296205, 428 71, 428119, 428120, 428137
Abstract:
A hollow structural member is reinforced by a housing in the form of a framework exposed structural foam on the housing. The housing is placed in the structural member at an orientation with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the structural member so that the foam is disposed directly against opposed walls of the structural member. Upon curing the foam becomes intimately bonded to the opposed walls of the structural member and to the housing for reinforcing the structural member. Preferably the housing is formed by extrusion so that it can be cut to size across its extrusion axis.

Oven Cured Structural Foam With Designed-In Sag Positioning

US Patent:
6455144, Sep 24, 2002
Filed:
May 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/580883
Inventors:
Joseph S. Wycech - Grosse Pointe Shores MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
B32B 514
US Classification:
4283084, 4283044, 296204, 296187, 296205, 527316, 527351
Abstract:
A laminate for reinforcing a structural member having a plurality of side walls comprises a carrier having at least one inclined support surface. Each support surface has an outer edge disposed toward a respective side wall. A layer of extruded uncured structural foam is on each support surface and terminates inwardly of the outer edge. The foam expands when cured and tumbles down the inclined support surface of the carrier to become bonded to the side wall as well as the carrier. By being spaced from the outer edge of the support surface, the tendency for the foam to wipe against the side wall is minimized as is the tendency for a worker to touch the foam when the worker places the carrier into the structural member.

Foil Backed Laminate Reinforcement

US Patent:
6482496, Nov 19, 2002
Filed:
Jun 17, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/099025
Inventors:
Joseph S Wycech - Grosse Pointe Woods MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
B32B 300
US Classification:
428 71, 428185, 4284258, 5278312, 2961466
Abstract:
A reinforced wall comprises a stiff substrate having a reinforcing laminate bonded to its inner surface. The reinforcing laminate includes an outer foil support and an expandable polymer foam material bonded to the foil support or backing. The polymer foam is disposed against the inner surface of the substrate and becomes intimately bonded to the inner surface upon activation and expansion of the foam material.

Reinforced Structural Assembly

US Patent:
6546693, Apr 15, 2003
Filed:
Apr 11, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/832431
Inventors:
Joseph S. Wycech - Grosse Pointe Shores MI
Assignee:
Henkel Corporation - Gulph Mills PA
International Classification:
B62D 2504
US Classification:
527901, 527931, 527351, 52232, 296188, 296 30
Abstract:
A stiffener is provided for reinforcing a hollow structure having a pair of spaced walls with a pin extending across the walls. The stiffener includes a carrier member with a layer of expandable polymer which creates a structural foam when the polymer is later expanded. The stiffener could comprise a horseshoe shaped laminate shaped to fit over the pin of the hollow structure so that when the polymer is expanded it forms a structural foam intimately bonded to the pair of spaced walls.
