Floating Sander Device

View page
US Patent:
6722967, Apr 20, 2004
Filed:
Oct 9, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/267165
Inventors:
Ronald Alan Oddo - Lancaster CA
John Charles Firm - Palmdale CA
Kenneth Scott Corkill - Lancaster CA
Coyte Richard Jones - Lancaster CA
Ronald EuGene Roche - Phelan CA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B24B 718
US Classification:
451353, 451519, 451486, 451354, 451484
Abstract:
A resilient sanding mechanism is provided for sanding the contours of a working surface, such as an aircraft body. The mechanism comprises an elongate frame having a frame axis, a sander mechanism pivotally engaged to the frame and having a sanding surface disposed distal to the frame. A resilient biasing apparatus is engageable to the sander mechanism and to the frame, for biasing the sander mechanism sanding surface in a predetermined orientation with respect to the frame axis.

US Patent:
6793567, Sep 21, 2004
Filed:
May 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/430921
Inventors:
Kenneth Scott Corkill - Lancaster CA
John Charles Firm - Palmdale CA
Ronald Eugene Roche - Phelan CA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
B24B 2300
US Classification:
451353, 451350
Abstract:
A floating sanding mechanism is provided including a handle, support arm secured to an extending from the handle and a support arm mounting plate pivotally engaged to the support arm. A counter-weight support plate pivotally engaged to the support arm mounting plate and the plurality of resilient members connect to the support arm mounting plate to the counter-weight support plate, so as to pivotally bias the counter-weight support plate in a predetermined orientation, e. g. generally parallel to the support arm mounting plate. A plurality of counter-weights are secured to the counter-weight support plate, proximate a perimeter thereof. A rotating sanding surface is mechanically coupled to the counter-weight support plate and translatable to infinite orientations therewith. The resilient members and the counter-weights are selected such that the sanding surface generally follows the contours of the surface to be sanded, overcoming the opposition of the resilient members.

Portable Handrail System

View page
US Patent:
6406002, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Jun 13, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/592754
Inventors:
John Charles Firm - Palmdale CA
Assignee:
Northrop Grumman Corporation - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
E04H 1700
US Classification:
256 24, 256 64, 256 23, 256DIG 2
Abstract:
A stable portable handrail system able to withstand significant weight and stress through sound securement of surface-engaging components thereof. The system first includes a plurality of spaced-apart vertical members each having at a base a pivoting vacuum cup assembly for vacuum engagement with a substantially horizontal surface upon which the handrail system is to be accommodated. At least one horizontal member is connected to each vertical member, and at least one brace member extends in outrigger fashion to the horizontal surface at an angle with respect to the vertical members. The base of the brace member likewise is a pivoting vacuum cup assembly for vacuum engagement with the horizontal surface. Preferably, all vacuum cup assemblies include respective valves for external application of a vacuum source for stable system vacuum securement throughout the term of use of the handrail system. Brace orientation at an angle between about 30Â and 60Â contributes significant load bearing attachment and resulting stability and safety to this portable handrail system.
