Filed:
Nov 6, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/188400
Inventors:
Zine Eddine Boutaghou - Vadnais Heights MN
Joel David Limmer - Bloomington MN
Jorge Vicente Hanchi - Bloomington MN
Lance Eugene Stover - Eden Prairie MN
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 2121
US Classification:
3602351, 3602363, 360237
Abstract:
A disk drive system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp assembly includes a set of ramps for loading and unloading the sliders and transducing elements carried by the sliders to and from the disks in the disk stack. The ramp assembly is attached to the base. An actuator assembly is movably attached to the base of the disk drive. The actuator assembly moves the load springs and attached slider and transducers to various positions on the disk. The slider is a block of material having corners and edges. Sliders have a backside surface and an air-bearing surface. The slider also has at least one recess therein. One or more pads of shock absorbing material are positioned within at least one of the recesses in the slider. The pads are positioned within one or more recesses to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material near the air-bearing surface from contacting the disk.

Stepped Disc Drive Voice Coil Actuator Acceleration For Reducing Resonance Of Head Level Micro-Actuators

Zine Eddine Boutaghou - Vadnais Heights MN
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 5596
US Classification:
360 7806, 360 7805, 360 75, 360 7812
Abstract:
A disc drive having a voice coil actuator with an attached suspension and head, the head including a micro-actuator. The micro-actuator having at least one natural frequency and at least one natural frequency time period. The voice coil actuator is adapted to attenuate a resonance of the micro-actuator at the at least one natural frequency using a stepped acceleration.

Suspension Sense Capability For Windage Control

View page
US Patent:
6771454, Aug 3, 2004
Filed:
Sep 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/945940
Inventors:
Andrew D. White - Eden Prairie MN
Joel D. Limmer - Bloomington MN
Wayne A. Bonin - North Oaks MN
Zine-Eddine Boutaghou - Vadnais Heights MN
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 5596
US Classification:
360 7703, 360 7701
Abstract:
A method and data storage device are provided that reduce off-track motion due to resonant modes in the storage device. The off-track motion is reduced by sensing movement with a sensor located on a suspension assembly of the storage device. Based on this sensed movement, the sensor generates a signal that is used to drive a control system to minimize the off-track motion.

Feed Forward Control Of Voice Coil Motor Induced Microactuator Disturbance

View page
US Patent:
6778350, Aug 17, 2004
Filed:
Jun 8, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/877345
Inventors:
Wayne A. Bonin - North Oaks MN
Zine-Eddine Boutaghou - Vadnais Heights MN
Joel Limmer - Bloomington MN
Andrew D. White - Eden Prairie MN
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 5596
US Classification:
360 7805
Abstract:
A method is used for moving a transducing head between tracks of a disc in a dual-stage actuation assembly. The dual-stage actuation assembly has a main actuator for coarse positioning of the transducing head and a microactuator for fine positioning of the transducing head. The method comprises accelerating the main actuator during coarse positioning of the transducing head and applying control pulses to the microactuator during coarse positioning by the main actuator to eliminate oscillation of the microactuator during and after coarse positioning.
